I have a white rendered 1920s semi. And in process of replacing window

Should I go with dark grey windows and pale door or pale green windows and darker door or would white with black sills and slate grey door look best

It would help us if you post photos of your house so we can see what we are talking about. Best would be photos that show the entire front of the house.

I love both but it depends on the property and the overall style of the house. I am about to embark on a renovation project of a 1970s house and I’m looking to completely transform the exterior with render and change the windows to sashes, I don’t know where to start so any advice by sash window experts is welcome!

Hi all, Thank you so much for all the helpful comments and suggestions, and sorry that it's taken me so long to respond - house renovation and work have been keeping us on our toes! This has become a long post, so a quick reminder - we were looking to renovate and rewire our 60s house to update it and also make it more wheelchair friendly downstairs for when my mother-in-law comes to visit. We employed an architect and came up with what turned out to be an 'aspirational' design (much more than the budget!) so we ended up deciding to split things into two stages: Stage One to add a downstairs wetroom for accessibility, remove chimney throughout and add a porch Stage Two to do the extension across the rear, removing the conservatory to open out a large kitchen/diner and add a utility room The layout below shows both Stages One and Two as complete. Bits shown in red are existing walls which have been/will be removed (apart from the wall in red in the seating area below which is between the existing kitchen and dining room - that's a mistake). So.....the building work is now done - hurray! Stage One is complete, we are much poorer, and we now need to decorate the whole house :-) Some before and after photos below - please bear with the terrible photography skills. The rooms aren't big enough to allow for expansive photos!: We've re-plastered throughout, apart from in the kitchen and upstairs bathroom, as we'll deal with those later. Current challenge is deciding how on earth to pick paint colours and flooring throughout.... Anyway - hopefully that gives you a sense of where we've got to. Best wishes

Only my personal opinion...I would remove external shutters, look at the brickwork after this, clean if necessary. (Ideally not render due to costs to maintain). Dont worry about roof it will tone down. Personally I like a uniform look so would have internal shutters on all front facing windows (love these great summer or winter). Plant something beautiful to soften the lines....climbing wisteria always looks good properly supported. Re do driveway, invest in some substantial planters. Climbing plant needed to the right if the door as it's off centre. IF you had the money perhaps consider replacing the fencing both sides of your doorway with uniform fencing/walls (yes I know you are only responsible for one side) depending on your relationship with the neighbours. If not painting fencing facing the drive same colour. I like urban grey or tudor black to provide a dramatic backdrop to planting. (Think about co ordinating colour used on driveway). I would also put in an external light by the front door and think about what if any low level lighting you want at the front or either side of entrance depending on night time lights on the street.

Aluminium window colour advice please

I’m struggling to decide what colour aluminium windows to choose. We plan to replace all our windows and doors with aluminium flush casement ones (veering towards either Origin or Stellar windows at the moment), but can only afford to replace the rear of the house for time being. The style of each window would be similar to now with a top opener/skylight, but below that a 50/50 split casement window (since we're replacing, we now have to have an opening that meets fire safety requirements). Our house is pebble dash and currently painted magnolia which I hate. The plan is to repaint the render white as that is in keeping with the rest of the street and my other half is not keen on a coloured render. I think however that white windows with white render would just “disappear” and as our house has little in the way of architectural features back or front, the window style is the only way we can add any character. We've rejected modern grey windows as we think they may date, but have looked at both black frames, black frames with a white opening casement (window) and less dramatically white windows and frames with a black sill. The house is 1920s so incorporating black into the look would be in keeping. I’ve attached photos of the rear of our house, plus examples of all the ideas above that I’ve found online. (ignore the window features like leaded lights etc, these examples are just for the colours of the frames/window and sills). Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. I've attached a photo of the front of our house as well for info, although we don't plan to replace these windows for a year or so. On a separate note, we plan to enlarge the window in the single storey rear extension on the bottom right of the photo, by dropping the sill down so that we can have a window seat inside overlooking our garden as it's a lovely spot for reading/relaxing. I’d like it to be a fixed frame window without any openers (we have French doors on the side of the extension and we never use the current top openers in the window anyway) but I wonder if it would look odd given the rest of the windows will have top openers or dummy ones. Or is it better to just go for it and make a statement with a large fixed frame feature window? Would welcome some advice on this too. Thanks

What a pretty house! Great picture, but I can’t quite make out the current colour of the window frames. Are they brown? I think a lovely sage green would look good, but I do remember seeing houses of that era having black window frames. I’ll have a look to see what I can find.

Had a quick google and most people with 1920s houses seem to have white window frames, but I found a few with greyish frames. I particularly love the first house. The second one has the black Crittal style windows which I was thinking of, but I’m wondering if that is more 1930s?
