Storage Design Dilemma

building cloak in hallway

I am planning to have a fitted cloak, cottage style, built in hallway. It’s not quite got the depth to get coat hangers in for my coats. Not quite but nearly. I need to maximise space and I have a lot of coats. Other than pull out rails has anyone any other ideas?

Finally finished the hall and the transformation is complete. Kept the doors but painted the architrave and all other woodwork (Farrow & Ball Dimity Eggshell). Walls (F & B Joa's White Modern Emulsion) Carpet is sisal. Window shutters California Shutter Co. Wall up/down-lighters John Lewis, as are the ceramic radiator shelf lights, painted to match wall. LED Panel 'skylights' are magical. Wired to an external Dusk 2 Dawn sensor via a relay (To transpose output to Dawn 2 Dusk) they are activated by two occupancy sensors either end of the hallway and only operate during daylight hours, thus giving the very real effect that it's daylight flooding in. The wall lights are for night time and if it only needs to be subdued lighting, then the remote controlled shelf lights are used. The flickering flame wall sconces either side of the old loft door are for amusement at best, but look nice. Now to find some suitable wall decoration and also fit a curtain and tie-back at the mid-point. That will allow guests who use the end bedrooms some night time privacy when using the bathroom down there. Thanks to all you Houzzers for your input and support!

Well, there's probably nothing to be done about it, unless you have an HOA or Condo Board or something. So I guess I'd have to get over it. Any chance they're going to change the carpet?

With such a generous space you have the real opportunity to achieve a very elegant space. Of course, what can be achieved depends on budget, But this is what we would suggest: - re-condition the stairs, with better, lighter balusters, newel posts, a proper curled bottom step - Install a large lantern in place of the chandelier - replace the fireplace surrounds with something less crude and render; render or line its inner walls; recess the hearthstone; add a large mirror above the mantel, which will reflect the light of the lantern. - Paint all timber: the balusters, the double doors - if you paint the flat panel radiator the same colour of the wall and the double doors a contrasting colour, the radiator will become less noticeable. Radiator covers often draw more attention to it and dramatically cut down the radiator's efficiency, defeating the point twice. - White is not the only way: consider a warm gray or even a colour for the walls. Use contrast to your advantage. It will help to draw people's attention to what you want them to see (lantern, fireplace, stairs, double doors) and away from what you don't want them to notice (radiator) Here are some examples we have recently completed:

Thank you all for your constructive feedback so far - I appreciate it all and it has given me some food for thought. I particularly like @OnePlans suggestion of an open cloakroom/bench, but I do also agree with @Jen P that in practice it is likely to become messy. The response I am clinging on to most is @Jonathan ... "To be fair this hallway is 300mm wider than the hall in many houses". If this is the case then hopefully our dimensions are ok?? If the dimensions are reasonable, I would prefer not to reconfigure the rooms/walls, however your responses have made me think about maybe moving the bottom of the stairs back a bit from the front door and making the full length window beside the front door wider, which will hopefully let more light into the hall and at least make it feel more spacious. Here's what I have in mind... or alternatively try cantilever stairs which will let light into the deeper reaches of the hall... I welcome your thoughts.
