Hi Carrie, sorry it has taken so long for us to get back to you. The shower is behind a screen on the right of this image. The raised area has the bathroom and shower but is not a wet area.

Honestly, I think the freestanding tubs are a bit of a fad. They have a wonderful old-fashioned look (and I have an original clawfoot one in my 1920's era bathroom, which I love). But I don't think that a lovely inset tub with a deck around it (which is MUCH more convenient for perching your shampoo or bubblebath or soap) will ever go out of style. What may fluctuate is the popularity of some of the shapes, sizes, and materials. Some contemporary inset tubs I like:

Master bath reno - hoping to have shower fit next to bath with shower glass fitted on top of the bath surround ( like in the photo). We don't have that much extra space around the bath. The bath edges are 3" (4" where taps could be mounted - although we will do wall mounted). Question: if we have a stone bath deck that is 4" around - is that too thin? Will it look stupid?

The shower next to the bath looks like a good idea in the photo, all polished and shiny..... I think it would drive me crazy in practice as the bath tub would get soaked and no doubt splattered with shampoo and shower gel every time someone took a shower....but this may just be me being particularly OCD! One of the first things I consider when planning anything is what it will be like to maintain and keep it looking clean and new....Sad I know.. ;-)

Having built concrete spas and pools, run a hot tub business, etc. I would suggest avoiding wood. It will leak unless filled - the moisture swells the timber to create the seal. So when you drain it, the timbers dry and warp. Then refilling it leaks like a sieve. It does work eventually but not very user friendly, especially on a water meter. I was going to suggest concrete and the option above looks great. Just make sure that any forms will drain, so you’re not left with water marks from puddles in seating areas. You don’t want left over bath water in your next soak. Concrete would also allow you to tile using small white tiles and a white grout to get the colour match. Once stayed in a swanky holiday let with a bath that was ‘one end’ of the room. You stepped over a ‘wall’ to get into that end of the room and filled it. Felt very clever. Used black circular tiles and black grout - looked amazing and had a wave shaped seat that made it really comfortable. That last part is possibly the most important and hardest bit to get right. Finally a simpler option could be a Duravit Blue Moon - with hydrotherapy features. But lacks the substance of concrete, which would be my personal preference. Hope this is useful and good luck!
