6m extension idea
Comments (6)Hi we recently added a rear extension which is just under 4m wide by 5m long. We knocked out the back wall keeping our kitchen space within the old part and created a dining living space in the extension. Our front hall into living room was similar to yours and with 3 kids was tight. We created a metre wide hallway and turned the living room into a 3m x 4m snug. If you were willing to sacrifice your study you could run your hallway along to there creating a new doorway through perhaps adding a cloakroom and another door into your living room. Below is our plan and works great for us. The extension space we have is actually greater in reality than it looks on here. Open plan living but with an option of privacy with the snug....See More6m extension , will my kitchen be too dark ?
Comments (9)Hi Chandon, Looking at your plan, for the most part I can see you can provide natural light from the rooflights as you note. The area where light may be limited, as far as I can determin from your plan, is the floor area after the island containing the sink & hob etc. This I think is where you are in the existing dwelling ? If so, there doesn't appear to be any natural light from windows anywhere in this area as far as I can see, I guess there are restrictions on this side ? If the above is so, then some additional natural light may possible in the form of borrowed light from the hallway, as it looks from your plan you have an open plan study area with a window. As a consideration, perhaps an inset area of glass located in the dividing wall between the hallway & kitchen would provide some light ? Other than that & subject to what is above the kitchen area, (first floor rooms ?) one of those light tubes may be possible to duct in if it can be located without detriment to anything above. I've a HOUZZ page with built projects & photos you could have a look at & recall a similar project, please see link below, I trust this may be of some help. https://www.houzz.co.uk/hznb/photos/rear-extension-charles-hankin-close-ivybridge-contemporary-kitchen-phvw-vp~49547904 In the meantime, good luck with your build project....See MoreRear extension layout design ideas please
Comments (9)Hi Ollie, How about moving the door into the Utility Room so that is accessible from the Kitchen side, thus freeing up the wall where the current Utility room door is, and I would recommend you have some form of wall storage on that wall, as you don't immediately see it when you walk into the room. The kids benches could be off that wall too, so that on either side of the chimney breast and as you walk in the room you could have some open shelves / artwork. When the kids are not playing, you could turn this area into a yoga place! And yes, I agree your table could overlap a little with your existing house, unless you have a large beam above, not hidden in the thickness of the floor joists above. Also, I wonder if a round / oval table will work better in your case, and don't forget the lighting relative to your rooflights!...See MoreRear extension ideas
Comments (12)Thanks Susy, had a watch but was a hard one as my house is wider and didn't have quite the same problems, I will watch more of the series as it was I enjoyed watching the transformation. I'm sure I will find some plans/pictures eventually that are similar. Ellie; It's actually quite a decent size with a nice window, so it's got a decent amount of light downstairs. I would use it as a reading area and/or play area. Ultimate dream - baby/grand piano....See MoreDipesh
