What colour to choose for woodchip wallpaper?

We have woodchip paper on our living room walls. For budget reasons, we have decided to not strip the paper and re-plaster. We have had white all these years which looked okay. But as a part of our remodel, we are searching for another colour that would look good on the woodchip wall. We tried a tester pot of Sulking Room Pink F&B and the bumps on the wall seemed more prominent than when we had white. Are there any recommendations for colours for a woodchip wall? Many Thanks.

Don't keep the woodchip!!!

I know it's a real pain to remove (I've stripped it from 2 rooms), but flat walls are much nicer. One of my rooms was skimmed as part of kitchen/diner renovation. But I used wallrock lining paper in the other room which worked out pretty well.

I agree, don't paint over. If you can afford to use F&B paint then do it properly and remove it. I can believe that the F&B will make it more prominent as opposed to the flat white, expensive paint in this case is likely to be a waste, in my opinion

Hi Caro, I have attached two images of wall paper that I think you compliment your kitchen. The green and blues in these wallpapers would harmonise with the existing titles and highlight the height of the room. From your ideas book it seems you like repeat patterns, both of these styles suggest a 60s feel whilst remaining contemporary. As you can see in the second photograph, the pattern and colours sit very well with the dark shiny worktop, similar to the one you mention putting in at a later date. Hello Caro, That is a spectacular kitchen and the second I have seen on Houzz that's similar.. The other was yellow but the owners ripped it out! I am very glad you're keeping yours.. The fridge is wonderful too... What would really make this stand out is if you could find a home for the pans... So the kitchen remains sleek... Could I suggest a warmer lighter granite for the worktop or perhaps a worktop that would compliment the look like Formica! ... I think black would be too harsh here.. Something with blue in would be good too so it compliments the tiles... OR keep what you have as it looks blue.... You could have blue as a theme for the flooring too... Are you changing the flooring?.. I was looking for advice on exactly the same dilemma! We have chosen Orla Kiely Giant Abacus for a feature wall in the living room. Grey background, cream petals with an olive centre. We have a cream carpet and cream leather suite with mid grey armchair and room doesn't have big windows, so trying to maximise the light. What colour would you suggest for the other walls? I agree with the others - get rid of the woodchip!

Both my current house and my first house were covered in the stuff - we stripped it off ourselves (cost = free, but we did buy a cheap steamer). We were worried about the state of the walls because at the time we couldn’t afford to get them re-skimmed - however it’s surprising what a decent box of filler and a sheet of sand paper can do. In terms of cost, it was very little, but the end result was a million times better than the woodchip.

Agree with others that getting rid is the best bet. Just be ready for the extra expense of any wall repairs.

I started renovating our small attic bedroom in mid August thinking that I only needed to strip the woodchip and do a bit of filling. It needed taking back to the brick in places and total reskimming.

Looks fab now in Tranquil Dawn and the woodchip kept on the sloped ceiling painted in the same colour actually looks ok!

Thank you all very much for the advice. We have now made the decision to remove the woodchip. Having redone most of the house we don't want the living room to be an eyesore. Very grateful to everyone for your advice.
