Front door colour dilemma

We have a nasty old brown upvc door with flowery glazing which we are looking to replace. The windows are leaded brown upvc but we can’t afford to replace them. Our house is very pale pink. What colour door and importantly frame should I go for?

Personally, I would just get the glass replaced with something made suitable for now as your cheapest option until you can afford to have all the windows either replaced.

Alternative is to have the windows sprayed but I imagine you don’t like the leadwork (makes rooms very dark!) so it would be a waste of money.

Pink and brown will be hard to add another colour into. Another option is to paint the house white and have a white door put on but are you going for a traditional look or trying to modernise it? Ie what are your long term plan colours?

The door is sticking badly. We’ve repaired it but it really needs to be replaced. We are only planning on staying in the house for 5 years maximum so we may not replace the windows at all.

I had a similar situation, i went for a solidor composite door in a pale colour (to try and minimise heat absorbtion)... They advise to leave the door locked whenever possible (which activates retaining bolts top, middle, bottom) for the first month or so to prevent any future warping...

Hello Miriam, What a lovely cottage. I would use the front room a reception, mudroom / library, occasional writing. It looks like a lovely bright room. It can be used as a dining space for occasions to accommodate a big table if needed. You could put a folding table between the chimney which can act as a console when not in use. An internal window could be added to the space to the right of the stairs opposite the entrance door to bring some more light into the back of the house. In the back room if you put TV above the chimney. You could have a breakfast bar table with couple of bar stools. That would free another wall for a couch.

I think you could go bolder as grey is such a good foil for other colours. I love a bright door! I’ve gone F&B’s Cooks Blue. My friend said it should be called Bluebell Blue! As suggested above, do the frame in grey like your windows and just paint the door in your chosen colour.

I would be inclined to have wall washing lights either side. Not sure about a canopy unless it is pitched like the existing porch roof with brick infill either side but otherwise kept open. Maybe stick with the lights first to see if that alone does the trick. Making the bed on the left the same shape as that on the right and repeating the planting would help to bring symmetry. I am not sure about the two tall Pom Pom shrubs in front of the windows. Sorry I cannot make out what they are. Could they be moved one at each corner of the house perhaps to make a full stop? Taking away some of the grass to extend the drive in front of the door would open up the entrance too. It is difficult to see on the photo but the grass seems to curve towards the door. It would be better if it followed the curve of the drive out and away from the door, basically an expansion of your step that seems to be a curve, and then return in front of the bed on the left in the photo. You could have a path here in front of the left bed in the same material as the drive. I know planting and reconfiguration of your drive wasn’t on your remit so I hope you don’t mind!

Ah ok. Well it’s different if you have to replace it due to it malfunctioning then.

I guess with you having black railings then black would be the safest option and not too obvious against the brown ( if you don’t want to go with another brown door).

Think the main issue is the pink paintwork as whatever you have has to not clash with the brown and pink!

If you had white walls then you could go with white or a navy as well

I would go with a colour. Brown is dark but quite neutral and I think maybe a green or blue or even yellow, but that may be a step too far! Here’s some ideas
