Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Help - stylish IPX extractor fan needed urgently!

We are starting on our new bathroom this week. But we have found out that we need an IPX5 rated extractor fan. I haven't been able to find anything so far that looks aesthetically pleasing. Has anyone got any suggestions please? I ideally wanted a fan integrated with the downlighter

Hi @pawilkins,

Not sure there's many aesthetically pleasing look extractors unfortunately.

What about something like this? The fan blades are hidden but no downlight though. Your electrician might be able to source something for you with a light and perhaps with trade discount.

As I can see that you dearly need more storage space !!! The Myson needs a depth of 302mm so you could use half depth tall or base cabinets or if the room lends itself to it - ie without cramping the entrance and exits - you have a full size DW to fit in - ideally near the sink and bin would be better than where it is now - but you also need to avoid putting it in the corners or when it's open you won't be able to reach across to put anything away ! Its always tricky to advise with no measurements - and no info about you or your family - or on wether you are looking to do this on a tight budget or a lavish one ! If you are looking to just do it up and sell the home - my advice would be to nip into your local kitchen shop and seek their advice and planning service as a generic kitchen plan would be fine for this purpose. If this is your home for a good few years yet - then I'd suggest getting a design done specifically for you, to suit not only the room - but how you cook, how much storage you need and how much prep area you need too etc etc - a bank of Tall units might well be the way to go - but it does take away worktop space, and the hatch ( if you use it ) - there may be other options - had you thought about including the dining room to make the space one large kitchen diner ?! Or having tall but half depth cabinets along one side to give easy access storage and a longer sink run ? Having a built under fridge and freezer or moving the current one to what might be storage behind one of those doors like Lisa suggested ? That way there may even be room for a freestanding chopping block or modern mini moveable island in the middle of the room - if that's the kind of thing that would work for you ?! Depending on what's behind those solid doors - You could even consider blocking up the back door and changing part of the window to a door and having a galley kitchen ?! There are so many options - (and so many unknowns ) a designer needs to know more about you, your budget and your hopes and dreams for the place ! Don't limit yourself to just replicating what's there !!! Hiring an independent kitchen designer isn't expensive - and shopping around can save you so much more than the design fee ! I know - as my clients tell me this all the time !!! Sorry that turned into a small book ! And my coffee has gone cold ! Coffee break over - will need to microwave it !!! ;-)

Depending on how far you budget goes, I would look at adding traditional cornice and pelmet and replacing the plinth with a similar oyster colour. End panels for wall units could also be replaced / added. Some chessboard style tilling in 3 colours would also bring out the walls. It's hard to tell but is the oak surround also on the wall units? I haven't checked your location but this is something we can help with

Hello Pirbhai_s, Welcome! Well decisions need to be made re the conservatory before you can decide what to have where, but certainly re arranging the entrance to the loo would be good! You can then still do what I had suggested once the doorway has been blocked off.. If you can access the loo from the kitchen door side by putting in a door that side.. In this way you keep as much space as possible in the kitchen. You are only losing the outline of the loo area. If the room from the second door allows for a pull out larder then you could still have that, along with a wall unit oven but then would need to have a hob... This takes even more room.. In a small space you will have to think of a compromise.. You could be clever and have an induction hob which lends itself when not in use to worktop.... If you have a worktop that blends into the hob then the view is not broken.. ie something similar in colour.. Although I was veering away from dark worktops... What you need to decide on is the conservatory aspect... Only then can you see what you have to work with cupboards wise and finish wise.. You could also have a more open plan kitchen dining area, as you have mentioned.. then no need to have a minimal hob look that blends with the worktop. You could also consider a dresser in the conservatory for crockery and things... thus freeing up space in the kitchen.. In addition you would then be able to lose the other door, as it would be surplus to requirements, so you could make use of that space for storage cupboards, worktop and shelving for example.... The sink could then sit in front of the other window.. : ))

Hello Amanda, : )) Do you mean in the kitchen? Yes a nice idea. I like flat plate too, but really plain. Well the best way to describe how I feel about certain alterations is to tell you about someone I knew who "did up" her flat to such a degree that she literally took away all that was characterful about it.. Sometimes it's best to leave things as their patina develops over time and results in something quite special. Restoration is one thing but you can also restore the life out of something and thus diminish in certain contexts the value- and so it's good to know when to stop.. So yes, I'm firmly in the camp suggesting leave them, but of course it's entirely your choice. : ))
