Using Rattan furniture for conservatory

Hello,

We're about to move into a new house and have a lovely conservatory (5m x 3.5m).... I guess I'd always have thought proper conservatory furniture was made of cane however, this seems so expensive when compared to rattan garden furniture (see image).

Would the rattan furniture be sufficient or should we pay out and get the cane furniture?

I wouldn’t use garden furniture personally (although there are some around which do not look like garden furniture). There’s nothing to say you need to use cane furniture in a conservatory either. I’ve attached a link, albeit quite old, with decor ideas. Having said that I love cane/rattan which is very on trend atm so so maybe mix an upholstered sofa with rattan chair/s. Maybe look at modern chairs rather than the traditional conservatory furniture which is dear

Thank you! I was always under the impression that normal furniture would fade with the sunlight? Thank you!

Oh ok. I agree, keep furniture simple. Painted/french style furniture looks good in a conservatory but wood would also be good. Would keep the sofa white/cream but maybe add a couple of cushions in blue/green and keep the rest of the colour for plants and as I say maybe some blue/White ceramics. The floor looks good and the room should obviously be able to handle a dark floor. The only thing I would say ( unless you get the new stuff that's around) is that you're not meant to wash laminate too much as the gaps between the planks aren't laminated if you plan on using the garden a lot. A wood effect karndean or amtico floor maybe be a better option although it is obviously dearer. I'd go for blinds, maybe a painted wooden venetian with tapes ( as they look similar to shutters) or roller blinds. If you went for Roman blinds I think I'd keep them very neutral based on the number of windows you have or it could look too busy?

The layout is much better but it's a bit busy for me. I'd have fewer formal accessories (such as cushions and the plant and photo on the window sill seem out of place to me) and fewer bits and pieces overall. I'd put something much bigger on the wall behind the sofa or have many more pictures on it, adding them around what there is already. And I agree that the rug could be bigger.

Hi Firstly the new low-e glazing would make a considerable difference to the thermal properties of your conservatory. When used in conjunction with modern upvc profiles the efficiency is increased due to the pockets within the plastic structure of the profile. Comments above discuss opening the wall between the house snd the conservatory. You cannot do this and leave it as an opening without doors. The conservatory is not considered as part of the dwelling and therefore needs a final exit door between the two rooms. Personally I think it spoils a lovely property, however if it is valuable space and you are still unsure talk to a few independent window companies and not the big national one that is stylish and safe! Look up low e glass, there will be detailed info on how this works from the manufacturers of the glass such as Pilkingtons or St Gobain.

I can understand why you’ve set the couple of chairs looking out at the garden (for the view) but not sure that’s right. I would have arranged the room as I would a lounge; facing together or inwards or at the very least at an angle. I think the brickwork and the flooring make it look very rustic. If you have underfloor heating then I can’t see you being able to swap it. It reminds me of a quarry floor. Could you have a large square of seagrass carpet? Perhaps the small base wall could be painted?

I have furniture very similar to that in your post sited in my conservatory/garden room. For me cane furniture is very dated.

My furniture has been in there for around 5-6 years, has hardly faded and it is in the direct sunlight during the summer months all day.

There are no hard and fast rules with conservatory furniture. You can have cane, rattan or indoor style sofas, which will probably be more comfy. Some cane furniture is dated, usually with some horrible colourful pattern on it, but some natural rattan is lovely (See pic of single chair below which is from M&S). Depends on your budget of course and what you consider expensive. I would probably choose indoor type sofas for comfort. Natural fabrics can fade in the sun, my linen curtains have, but as they are a light shade, it doesn’t look terrible. I think manmade fabrics would not fade as much? Below is some conservatory furniture that I like. The single rattan chair is £399 from M&S.

As this is a new house, I would suggest you wait until you are sure you know how you want to use the conservatory. When we moved into our house we bought garden furniture for the conservatory. Firstly, we knew we needed garden furniture anyway. Secondly, it gave us something we could use in the conservatory while we figured out what we really needed, but without spending on expensive furniture we might not ultimately need.

The previous owners of our house used the conservatory as a second living room, which is what I thought we would do. In fact it has turned out to be a more multipurpose room than that. We often use it for dining when we have guests; it has been used as games room and as an extension to the garden. For that reason, I have found garden furniture quite useful, as it is light and easy to move into the garden when needed or out of the way when we need space for a dining table. We did upgrade our garden furniture to something a bit more expensive and more comfortable eventually. We also found that the conservatory was too hot, or too cold or too leaky to use as a sitting area for a lot of the time. We have had it replaced a few weeks ago with a more modern one, so hope to make more use of it.

Our furniture did fade with the sunlight. However, it was an old conservatory with little protection from the sunlight. Newer glass provides more protection. Many conservatories also have solid roofs, which will make a big difference. Sunlight will fade most things, but how quickly will depend how much sunlight and how strong it is.

Furniture/fabric etc can fade in any room (I have a bedroom which has windows facing east on one side and another facing south. Weirdly the east side keeps fading the cotton bedding really badly!). Some fabrics are also better than others with UV resistance and I guess it should depend on the rooms orientation and how much light it actually gets (may be blocked by trees etc?).

if you’re really worried you can use the solar window film, which is quite reasonably priced, or solar protection blinds ( i Think most of the light damage is going to come through the roof). Having said that, it could be that the conservatory was built with the solar control glass?! May be worth asking before you move?

‘Dante’ range from John Lewis also nice. We’ve got a small sofa, but I’d probably wait as it’s the wrong time of year to be buying rattan furniture!

@H A just out of interest, what makes this the wrong time of year? When would be best?

@Nick I'd hate if it was too hot/cold to use, I have always wanted a conservatory haha. We'll wait and see.

We have full blinds on every glass pane in the conservatory (including the roof) which I hope will help with controlling the temp a little.

Our main problem is that we probably need enough to seat around 8 people. You can easily do this with a rattan furniture set for around £500-600. To do it with real furniture or the cane furniture would I would guess cost around £1500-2000 which is quite a difference for us when we're having to furniture alot of rooms when we move in.

Hi Anthony, spring/early summer when everywhere has garden stuff in store. You do (as with most things in life) get what you pay for. Some of the more reasonably priced rattan-effect looks cheap and is flimsy. X
