What to do with this ‘dead space’ ?

Hi,

Been at a loss on what to do with the dead space in my kitchen area (the part with the 2 small chairs)

More seating isn’t required as we have a table and breakfast bar

The window is lower than the rest of the kitchen utility windows too, so more cupboards isn’t much of an option.

I could put a door between that space and the kitchen, but unsure what that’s going to achieve.

Help...

Plus: I already have a projector TV area around the corner from the kitchen so a ‘snug’ isn’t required

It depends what you plan to do with the rest of the space. If you decorate in bolder colours or using pattern, or if you plan to hang pictures and mirrors on the surrounding walls then this space may feel better if it's kept clear. The beautiful timber banisters are very decorative in themselves and it will give your eye a space to rest. Alternatively you could maximise the effects of the daylight through the rooflight and display a selection of glassware or a collection of textured pieces that would benefit from and highlight this incoming light. In which case I would be tempted to go darker on the walls to draw your eye to the light and display.

Not as fun as the swing (what a fab idea!) but maybe try to make it a sort of lobby/arrival space. So you could have a small console table with a narrow lamp, or set of shelves to the left of the hall door, this can be a place to drop mail and papers and stop it accumulating in the kitchen? and then perhaps a mirror between the two doors would be nice. PS lovely worktop - is it real marble?

I was just thinking about people coming in and dragging suitcases and bags against the wall, meaning that wall will get scuffed fairly quickly with nothing there. How about this idea using Ikea shoe storage https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/small-storage-organisers/shoe-cabinets/trones-shoe-cabinet-storage-white-art-00397307/ A few together wall hung with a wooden shelf on top. It would be a handy place not just for shoes but magazines, tourist leaflets, property information, etc., plus you could still hang a nice mirror or art above. Search for Ikea trones hack on google, there are lots of examples.

Hi Craig,

I would be tempted to make this an office style area with an table under the window (although the ledge looks low) with a feature bookcase or shelves.

Thanks for the suggestion. However I have an office upstairs which is more suited to that purpose.

Not really a ‘book person’ so not sure if I’d go down that road

Would Anyone put a door there and remove the current utility wall ? Unsure what I’ll really gain though (a bigger utility obviously ! - but not sure I need that)

Hi Craig, What does the room lead off of? Is it the front door? This could be used as a utility/ cloakroom area if so. Adding some shelving above the radiator and some coat hooks on the door wall.

Or adding a door between the kitchen and this room (as you suggest) could allow you to create a play area if you have children or even a games room for yourself.

If you have pets, especially dogs, this could be used as a good area to get them clean after a muddy walk!

Lots of potential so have a think about your lifestyle and what would benefit the way you live or just something you've always wanted in your home and see if this space would accommodate.

It’s hard to say as we don’t know anything about you/your family or your hobbies!

personally I’d prefer an office downstairs so it’s close to drinks but you’d obviously need a door for privacy

Hi, thanks for the replies. My current office is in a nice cosy area upstairs - so I’ll keep that dedicated to the office.

The front door is at the front of the house. This area has that utility which has the back door and entry to the garage to it.

To be fair, this area is at the ‘boring end’ of the house !

I don’t have kids yet, but hopefully in the near future. A play area is a good idea, would you put a door up to split it from the kitchen?

Great spaces Craig, lots to play with!

If you go down the play area route, I'd personally add a door between the space but possibly use an internal door that includes glass panels. This way you can keep an eye on the kids but still have a little peace and quiet :)

Plus it keeps the open plan feel.

I’d leave it open else it will become a box room with 2 doors. Do you have any hobbies at all? Music area? Gaming? Reading nook? Painting area? Secondary study? Yoga/work out area? Secondary snug? Boot room/cloaks? Playroom? Mini bar area? Mini pool table? There’s loads of things I would use it for! You could also take the wall down between that room & kitchen, and extend the kitchen units more if you needed to!

I can’t help but think if you had a sofa as opposed to two tub chairs in there it would be more tempting to use it. Plus a small coffee table. .

The two tub chairs are too far apart to get involved in friendly chat.

The tub chairs are perfect for a socially-distanced chat...haha...but yeah they are too far apart.

Lots of great ideas thrown around here.

I think a play-area would be a great idea if that times comes.

Hi Craig, I was also gone to suggest a study or library area but as you already have one perhaps you could use it for a prepping kitchen. We have clients who want to use the main kitchen for entertaining and therefore don’t want to have all the prep work out on display. Having a smaller kitchen off the main one allows all the mess to be hidden and shut away at a moments notice. Other options are a built in bar/club room or boot /storage room. It doesn’t look like you have a lot of storage in the kitchen with only base units

so maybe this would be handy to store larger things that you might not necessarily use every day. I can see you have gone for a very slick design which is great but remember to bring in some friction. In designer’s terms this means texture and contrasting colours to make the space feel more like a home rather than a show kitchen. Wooden accessories and plants are always a good way to make the space feel more welcoming without losing the minimalist feel.
