To paint or not to paint....

Our spare room/part time office currently has a teal/petrol blue feature wall. I’m starting to feel like the one painted wall isn’t doing it for me and am thinking about going the whole hog and doing the whole room in the colour. But I can’t decide if the room will end up feeling gloomy and cramped.

The room is 4.4m from the door wall to the window wall and 2.9m wide. We’re in an old tenement so have the high 3m ceiling. It’s a south facing room and I currently use it as an office during the day.

I’ve attached pics so you can see it as is. (A bit on the messy side!) The desk, shelves and carpet are staying. I’m swapping the bed out for the one in the photo. The wee table in the window is going (and ignore the wagon wheel in the window 😂). I’m also good with upcycling the bedside table and chest of drawers - new colour and knobs maybe.

My dream is a lovely, luxe, jewel toned room....what do we think? Will all walls in the teal colour be too much for the space?
Any advice appreciated 😁

Those gates really do look good. We advise our customers that if they want a painted finish NOT to go for hardwood. The cost can easily double (if not treble) in price and there is no real advantage if instead using a slow grown softwood! In fact, density level of iroko (hardwood) and slow grown redwood pine is extremely close. Yes hardwood is dense but so is some softwoods. Also, the natural beauty of hardwood with a quality oil finish is stunning and seems a crime to paint - in our opinion!

So today I'm leaning towards F&B's Pigeon! Although I don't feel 100%. I'm worried I'm going to create some garish crazy fun house if I use too many colours. I'm hoping instead to create a cool, slightly retro feel but in a grown up sophisticated!! I have made one decision which is to rule out Egyptian cotton purely on the grounds we have so much of it in the new area, I think it would be overkill in the hall, plus the WC is light (timeless) so it might end up being too bland if I add more neutral. Bleached Lichen I still don't think it ties in brilliantly so essentially not much clearer as to what to do!!!! ED thanks for your comment, they're the original 1960 stairs so fail to comply with any H&S standards, but I like them so they're staying! I think at some point I will remove the paint on the rail but I will be a tricky job. Can't remember what the wood under the carpet is like but I would worry about people slipping down the stairs if there were no carpet.

I’d paint it - maybe 2 tone as some of the comments suggest. I did mine this summer, absolutely love how stylish it looks. I used chalk paint which needed no undercoat (some mahogany coloured stain previously) - although the grey took better than the white. Your stair gate suggest kids, I have 3 small ones and a few chips have appeared on mine, but overall I’m pleased with it. It gets a lot of comments when people come over. (We also need new carpet but holding off until the youngest gets potty trained)

You could always paint the wall behind in F & B Elephants Breath to compliment your carpet, sofa and curtains (like the picture) and paint the wood in a soft white like Pointing F &B. Have you considered painting the other furniture or having it sprayed professionally -it gives it a really hard wearing finish and it would completely update the room. You could then choose a white ornate mirror or maybe a gold as you have brass on your fire surround. The gold star burst mirrors look stunning if you like that sort of look.

I think the walls will look super.

I would also paint the radiator to match.

I would probably paint the ceiling a pale grey to help the white coving stand out.

And personally I would choose a more neutral bed because it’s inexpensive to change a wall color or bedding if you later fancy a change- but a bright colored upholstered bed is going to tie you in to certain looks only

Lovely colours, go for it.

However, if you are using this room as an office, I assume it isn't used very often as a bedroom. You say you want to replace the bed but why don't you get a sofa bed instead. That way you have the bed facility but during the day, it would be a far less cramped space?
