Decorative mouldings

My living room has decorative mouldings all over the walls and ceiling. It would be a big job to get it all ripped off. Could it look good or is it out of date? Any ideas what I could do with it all colour wise? All one colour or different colours?

Very Regency Kitsch, if you hate them then they have to go, but you could work with them as well. The wall mouldings are the easiest, they would look good in a single colour same as the walls, maybe a dark one?

Or go for a more distressed look and expose the the masonry underneath

This is a farrow and ball room inspiration which shows how it cold work. You could also add some aged gold leaf to poke through from underneith. The ceiling is harder, it 'could' be covered over with a better rose and maybe some coffering but that would be alot of work, it might look nicer if it was painted in a wedgwood pastle with the woulding spicked out in white?

Or you could go for somthing more modern and fit mirroring around parts of it to raise the ceiling.

Ceilings are one of my passions and I feel one of the most underused parts of a room :( None of these images are my work, I've just pulled them out of my scrapbook.

I’ve seen ceiling mouldings many times but never quite like that! Whether it’s original I do not know, but I suspect not and someone was trying to create a look. Is it a period property?

It was the best thing to do for this stage in our lives. Each home we had fitted our circumstances at the time; no children to a growing busy family back to occasional family. We left our 5 bedroom Victorian town house with the typical large rooms which we had lived in for 20 years and the location we had been in for over 30 years We had created a small but beautiful walled garden and I had to travel by car to my allotment. Having decided to move we spent time sorting the house to make the best of marketing it. We went through all the boxes of photographs, (my three boys having a good giggle), threw the unnecessary or duplicate ones away, then sent them off to be put on CD. We kept the shoe box full of photos as well just in case..... I put all my boys school stuff into separate boxes and they had to decide what to do with it. One did not even look at it, one looked and then dumped and one selected a few bits he wanted. As a joint exercise it was a wonderful family time and trip down memory lane. We had several sweeps through our belongings. Each time it was obvious what was not needed. Items given away, sold donated or dumped. It also became easier each time to let go of the things we previously thought we wanted. Finally storage for some bits then we moved into a rented flat whilst we looked for our next property. By the time we found it, and with the process of moving most of what was in storage was not needed emotionally or physically either. We are now 300 miles away in a two bedroom cottage in the middle of a forest. We are renovating it and adapting it (not enlarging) as we go, in fact turning it into a one bedroom property but with flexible other rooms. We do have the advantage of a mezzanine bedroom holiday conversion attached which we are using whilst the work is happening. This small space living is focusing us even further. Financially we are much better off, I am creating the home of my dreams, we have entered a new welcoming community and a totally new way of life. Our boys love visiting. We have been here for 18 months and so glad we have done it. Cathartic, most definitely, happier certainly, the right thing for this stage of our lives yes.

Hi, I think what we’re looking at is a picture rail. Quite common in houses built before the 1940’s. One way to tell is if you can hang a hook from it, it’s a picture rail, if not then it’ll be just decorative moulding. Does it go all the way round the room? Either way I wouldn’t remove it as it might bring the plaster off with it and give you a bigger job than you intended. You can either wallpaper or paint below or above it, or both. Here’s some ideas:

Thanks. I like the gold leaf on the rose idea. That shouldn’t be too hard to do. Walls all one colour with the darker skirting board looks nice as well.

The mouldings are original from when the house was built in the 1940’s.

You could also embelish the room with a more detailed coving, if its small you can place it over the original leaving an inch or two space at the top for some ambient lighting,

I love that!! looks so classy...I'd probably change the wallpaper within it though...but yes definitely keep that panneling/moulding

Yeah the wallpaper has needed changing for ever and came with the house when we moved in. I’m just going to take it off and paint the wall.

I like the very first photo uploaded by Kingfisher. The flat matt stone paint finish to the mouldings and wall is a good choice that will go with just about anything. You could use the same paint on the skirting and coving. This treatment will give the room height and will feel more spacious. Perhaps use an historic off white for the ceiling.
I would be inclined to change the light fitting. I am quite taken with the white ceramic pendant lights that are becoming increasingly popular. I have seen one on Houzz that looked like an upside down water lily flower.

In an easy world I’d remove them but it’s a messy job and I hate having messy work done. Yes, the light fitting is horrid and that will definitely go. Yes, I really like that first pic colour.

I agree it would be a messy and likely expensive job to remove all that moulding especially if you end up having to re plaster. If you can live with it then work with it. A tin of paint isn’t going to break the bank.

Removing the wallpaper will go a long way in helping the wall mouldings recede as in Kingfisher's suggested pic. Take it one step at a time to see how it looks after removal of wallpaper and painting, if the moulding remains something you would rather not have, try removing the wall moulding first. The ceiling would become the 'flash' in the room, especially with a new light fitting. Removing it all at once and you risk creating a bland room without any features...

I could probably live with the ceiling mouldings, but the wall ones, I don’t think I could.

If the house is from the 1940s then I think they were a pastiche at the time that the house was built. So, in other words, they might be original in one sense but not really original in the sense of being of their time. I’d be talking to a plasterer if they were mine. So don’t let them restrict what you would like to do with your home.
