Help with layout for awkward living room
Comments (1)Hi Vicki, Would there be any way you could change the mechanism of the kitchen/hallway/bathroom doors, so they are sliding doors rather than doors that open into the room? I've found this to be a good solution when you're tight on space, though you mentioned you may not be there for long so perhaps this would be too great an investment! I think installing shelving in the recesses around the fireplace would be great - I love this look in a living room. Also regarding the TV above the fireplace - you could get an extending wall bracket so that the length and angle of the TV can be adjusted, in addition to it being able to lie flat against the wall if you wish. Though some aren't fans of this type of bracket! Just a few ideas. Have you decided on any furniture?...See Moreliving room layout ideas?
Comments (4)A little re-arranging and some soft furnishings will sort it all out. The sofa that you've chosen will unfortunately not do the room any favours. It's quite a bland colour. Maybe one of the Sofa Covers from Ikea would help? Certainly one two seater is not really enough seating to create a cosy area, so add in a contrasting armchair. Grey cover for the sofa with pretty much any accent colour will work, yellows, oranges, blues, teal, turquoise etc Ikea Sofa Covers . It may be awkward to get covers for your sofa as it has quite wide arms, therefore a throw and then accent cushions will help. Ikea also have a great range of those to choose from:- Add in a rug that matches your sofa colour and your accent colour, in the render i've used mustard and then turquoise for examples. Curtains that match on both windows, or a large curtain for the big window and a matching blind for the smaller one. Put the Table and Chairs up by the patio window and move the T.V area to the slightly darker, cosier end. Get a mirror for opposite the dining table to bounce light around, maybe a floor standing lamp too, and another smaller one for the sofa area? Add in artwork to make the sofa area cosier....See MoreAwkward triangle living room furniture layout HELP
Comments (8)So... here goes: I've used the dimensions of the Ikea Klippan sofa, so something around that size should be okay. Also put in an Ikea armchair, and I'm thinking that you could incorporate the TV into the bookcases. Perhaps you could create a bench in the niche where the patio doors are, with a small dining table and a chair. I've seen people using Ikea (I'm not working for them, I promise) Kallax shelving units to create dining benches. If it's really 1.19 m, it would fit exactly (fingers crossed). Anyway, good tip is to make a paper version of furniture you've seen, using (news)paper and sticky tape and put it on the floor in the room to see how much floor space it will take up....See MoreAwkward apartment layout - tiny kitchen & bath - need open plan ideas!
Comments (14)I love the 'where do you keep your elbows' conundrum. ^^ It was great to see your layout because it was what I was thinking to try and reclaim some of the hall space. Danielle also captured the idea of switching the bathroom and the kitchen extremely well - and I really think this works too. I realise though that moving the door to the garden will involve a new set of stairs down to the garden - a big change, but perhaps minimises the changes to the internal walls as a balance. Jonathan's idea is also very creative - I had never even thought of this possible configuration. I realise as I am seeing these ideas that I'm more willing to give up some of the larger bedroom space as well, even if it off-sets the fireplace, to keep the idea of the wood burning stove as the heart of the flat. It may be that we are a small family of 3 and I'm thinking of this apartment as a family space, rather than for sharers. For sharers, maximum bedroom space is probably ideal... but for a family, at least in our case, we don't need much bedroom space. Also wondering about making the large bedroom smaller - to the edge of the fireplace to increase the bathroom. And moving the kitchen to the main living space... but not sure if this is overthinking things. And maybe Danielle above is the simplest option, even with replacing the stairs.......See Morekeiblem
