Overwhelmed with choosing a new oven

I’ve spent the past week researching new ovens for my renovated kitchen. I’ve digested reviews on Which, looked at John Lewis and AO but I’m no nearer deciding what I want. What I can say is that I’m going to go with either Bosch, Neff or AEG. When it comes to features I consider a meat probe a really cool device to have and a steam function. Slide & Hide, whilst looking impressive, isn’t an absolute necessity. Has anyone recently brought a new oven. I don’t mind spending over £500 as my Neff has lasted for 18 years. I was also considering the Samsung dual split ovens as I thought they were really useful for a small single oven kitchen, however I don’t think the brand is very reliable in this area. Any advice or feedback is most appreciated. Finally I do love a gadget

I have found Smeg to be extremely good, lasted well without any issues and most importantly reliable temperatures.

Sorry, an oven is an oven for me. We got Neff hide n slide, was around £500. I do like the door can be wide open but tucked away when taking things in/out, allows all the oven heat to hear the kitchen once finished too!

I would choose something very close to that deep red/rust/plum (can't quite work out what it is) in the granite. It looks as if that colour is also in the tea towel on the right (hanging on the handle in front of the oven). Everything else is so light I think the room would take it well and it would give it wow factor. You need a warm colour, as someone else has said, to tone with the cream of the cabinets and the granite.

I’m no colour expert, but I feel a stair carpet like your first pic is very neutral and won’t clash. Ive seen rooms that mix cream, grey and beige and they just look lovely. The dark staircase will add another dimension but still quite neutral. Your staircase is so beautiful it really doesn’t need too much of a change, Skimming Stone is a lovely grey/beige. I would get match pots of the colours you like, paint them on A4, or larger, card and try them in various places and see what you think, paint colours can really change depending on aspect and light. If you can get some carpet samples too you can create a mood board so you can really get an idea of the look. The pics below show how lovely grey, beige and black/grey/brown can look together. We did something similar a few years ago! We decided to rip up all of the carpet right away because it was beyond cleanable, and we just had floor boards for quite a while - no point putting down carpet while you’re making lots of mess. We sanded, filled and repainted the bedrooms and just used an old wardrobe until we could afford the ones we wanted. The bathroom was the biggest task for us because it was horrendous. We had the budget to do it straight away but ended up spending that budget on a rewire, new boiler and radiators, and new windows and a front door and the bathroom had to wait. I bought second hand furniture online (never buy soft furnishings only cleanable hard furnishings) and got the sofas from DFS on interest free credit which cost £7 a month or something ridiculously cheap like that. We have replaced the furniture room by room. We did the garden ourselves in the summer - it looks amazing and saved a fortune but it was really hard work. A lick of paint can really freshen up a room until you have funds to do what you really want to. For the kitchen you can get adhesive paper that you stick over your worktops - there are lots of videos online and it comes in many styles - might be worth you using that until you can redo your kitchen completely. When designing the kitchen have you thought about how you work in there? For example when the dishwasher door is open is it in the way of the place you are storing the dishes or do you have enough space between hob and sink as I find sink area gets filled with dirty dishes/pans. I spent quite a bit of time mentally working in my kitchen designs before finalising them as what looks good does not always work practically. We went for a Howden’s kitchen but not their design. We also went for drawers rather than cupboard because I used to find it annoying trying to get to things in the back of cupboards and as you get older opening a drawer and not having to bend down and peer in cupboards is great. I also agree that if you are going to spend any time in the kitchen that being able to look out over the garden makes for a much more pleasant working environment especially if you are washing up. When you are eating you are less likely to want to look outside as it will either be the evening or hopefully with company who you are focussing on. Also think about whether you will be cooking and socialising at the same time so may want to be able to talk to your guests easily without them having to stand in the kitchen with you or sit at the table/breakfast bar. Finally, do you really need a breakfast bar if you have a table in the kitchen?

I have an AEG oven which has loads of functions I never use, but the best bit is the pyrolytic cleaning function - no more scrubbing ovens!

Definitely get one with pyrolytic cleaning. Bosch/Neff/Siemens are the same company. Siemens is the premium range these days.

I have a double Neff oven. Don’t really use both ovens at the same time so could have opt for a single oven.

However, I'm not happy with it and wouldn’t have another. When baking it cooks more on the left hand side than the right. I also know several customers of ours who also have Neff ovens and theirs does exactly the same. It is infuriating when baking cakes to have the difference in colour. You’ve already sampled the Neff though and were satisfied with it.

If I were to choose favourite manufacturers I would put Miele top of my list (and boy you pay for it, but their products are excellent).

I would then rate AEG as a close second. Definitely in front of Neff and Bosch. I started out with an AEG induction hob which lasted the normal 8-10 years. Was a great hob. Replaced it with a Bosch one which wasn’t anywhere as good. As we are replacing the worktops I decided to swap the Bosch hob for an AEG again and glad I did. They have the edge in technology IMO. While it’s not the hob you’re referring to I’m just explaining my preference for a specific manufacturer.

We attend the kitchen exhibition show every other year at the NEC and have never been disappointed looking on the AEG stand to see what innovative ideas they have introduced to insert into their new products.

Another vote for a steam Oven. Vegetables hold their shape better and apparently retain their nutrients.
And it’s counterintuitive because the steam helps make anything roasted crisper!

It’s the little things that annoy me on ovens. The shelves on ours have a lip at the front and it’s hard to slide things on and off them. It’s also hard to clean the glass doors. Ours is an expensive range cooker. It looks hefty but I’d rather have my old, integrated eye level oven back even though it was a very cheap brand.

I have just ordered a new oven (well two of the same - going for two single ovens, side by side).

I have gone for Neff “slide and hide” pyrolytic:
- I much prefer eye level ovens (than low level or range cookers (always bending down) - but if you have a normal door, I remember that you are always reaching around it. So “slide and hide” means that you aren’t reaching around or.
- pyrolytic because it really will help with the cleaning.
I considered having one of the two as steam ovens, but really didn’t think that I would use the functionality.

I agree with “overwhelming choice”: same with paint colours, worktops, sofas, bar stools... 😳

I think that you need to work out what functionality is really important to you and you are willing to pay for.
