Help to modernise a 1970's house
Comments (33)Just another opinion...I like the suggestion that others posted to remove the bush and if possible, to put entry door in it's place, to remove the post and replace it with a support beam and brackets, replace garage door, add low wall to separate your driveway from the neighbor's, plant a dwarf tree in the front yard along with some edging plants... But with so many possibilities to choose from, perhaps you could accomplish your desire to make your home stand out from the others inexpensively by...painting over the white part of the house, the downspout directly above the canopy and the garage door to match the lightest brick color. Choose the darkest brick color for all of the other trim and windows. Patch and seal the driveway to freshen it (until you know if you will be permitted to do anything more permanent), definitely taking out the bush and doing some low cost planting just to add some color. It takes time to settle on your needs, style, budget, etc. But it's worthwhile to spend a little cash and effort to get a bit of satisfaction that things are looking better!...See MoreHow can I make our bland 1970's exterior more appealing?!
Comments (12)It all comes down to budget as always. The bigger the budge the more you can do. I would be really mindful of the fact, that if you change the facade, it would be better if you could change the windows. The wood cladding I agree would look fabulous, you could have the bottom a lovely grey to tone in. However, neither will look good with bog standard white windows, as both look better with a dark grey, thinner Aluminium Frame or a Chunkier Sandy Beige Frame. When you add white windows, the effect is not quite so slick The pic above shows the white windows with the cladding and it would look a lot better with the darker, thinner frames. If you can't afford to change or colour bond the windows, then maybe go for all over colour, a dark grey would be good, and consider changing the Front door for impact. Alternatively, work towards doing the ultimate change. The vertical wood cladding, with a grey underneath and a door to match the wood. Thinner dark pewter aluminium framed windows etc. sorry about the mock up quality!...See MoreMoved in to small terrace house. My problem is small corner for TV
Comments (3)Tbh I’d say keep the tv in proportion to the actual size of room and then look for possible fixing methods, a lot of people do the opposite, get a tv the size of a wall and wonder where to put it, nothing looks worse that a tv to big for a room in my eyes....See MoreWhich room should be which in a 5 storey Georgian terrace house?
Comments (30)I agree with Jonathan that the original proportions and symmetry will be important for keeping a wow factor. The house may originally have had two living spaces on the first floor so you could consider using one room there as a study. If you are a doggy family, a boot room in the basement might be useful if you can enter the house at that level. I would be inclined to have a separate laundry /ironing room on an upper floor if you don’t hang washing outside to dry. In a house this size you could consider a cinema/ computer games room in the basement if you would use it. Are you wine buffs - how about a wine cellar? Future owners can use the rooms for different things to you if they are generous enough sizes. It is important that you get to use as much of the house as suits your lifestyle as well as having a good number of bathrooms for whatever number of bedrooms you end up with. Do you entertain much? If so, would you use a formal dining room. Are you musical? Do either of you have hobbies like painting, crafting, woodwork? Do you collect things? If your living room is on a separate floor from the kitchen, how about having a tea/coffee making facility and a drinks fridge in a cupboard on that floor?...See MoreGary Whapples
