Help decide on colour for laminate fitted wardrobes

Giving a new lease of life to a dated room until we renovate properly. I’ve painted the walls in Little Greene’s China Clay, have a teal/green velvet bed and yellow ottoman. What colour should I paint the wardrobes? They’re currently in the same colour as the walls but I’m not loving it and don’t know if it’s just the matte finish I don’t like... (picture above bed can be replaced with a blue/gold one if necessary). Any ideas welcome...

Hello Karina, I see what you mean. It depends on the feel you want for your bedroom. Do you want a pop of colour ? By the picture in the room it looks like you do not mind this. If yes you can cover them with wallpaper. Get an Acrylic/ perspex mirror. Or attach coloured perspex. Or just completely change the doors to a colour. Using colours from your picture, headboard or ottoman. Pastel colours for calm, brights for a wow or for exotic look golds, metallics, which will go with your other picture. If you have space move the ottoman to the foot of the bed and then make that recess area into a snug seating area with a comfy chair small table to put a drink on and a plant which will change the look and could guide you more. Mmm! The more I look at it could be that area just needs to be covered so that same doors that will give it an more complete cohesive look. Then paint it a gloss, rather than a matt. Laminate painting can be a mare so you could check out your local garage that spray paints cars and they could spray paint the doors evenly. Or buy a spray gun and do it yourself. Then it would like a more of a built in. I think more personal objects will guide you too. If we can see the other blue gold picture it will give us more of an Idea to work on. Blue gold yellow and teal sound exotic, so a feature wall in those exotic colours will take your eye away from the built ins. Or maybe then put the same wall paper with the comfy chair in the recess.... Have fun.

Did you use emulsion paint? I think an eggshell or Satinwood wood finish would be a better option. I think painting the wardrobes white would lift it.

We're all for a bit of hard work, and would definitely paint the cupboards. You are right not to use F&B, it's an inferior paint compared to dulux, and not correct for your purposes, being Eggshell finish. Dulux Trade Satinwood is far better, gives a better finish and is hardwearing. ( It's also more expensive than F&B i'm afraid, but you get what you pay for ). I'd paint the cupboards in a pale grey and replace the knobs. Give the area behind the bed a good dark grey finish, to help with making your choice of headboard really stand out. Hello Claire, I'm sure you will have lots of different opinions on this but my preference is for free standing wardrobes in this size of room. You have to balance this with the storage your girls need, obviously fitted furniture gives more storage. If you put in good quality free standing painted wardrobe in you can re paint in a few years to reflect your youngsters changing tastes. Pink looks really good to an 8 year old but she will hate it by the time she hits 10. Those are my thoughts, hope that helps, Martin - www.angel-martin.com

Modern interior design takes much more of a mix and match approach these days. Lots of our clients want to get away from interiors all in the same finish or colour. In your case your fitted wardrobes painted in one colour can work really well with the natural look of wood. In this example of one of our kitchen installations we have oak working happily alongside 2 different cabinet colours. Hope this helps and good luck with your project!!

If you fit the frame flush to the wall and have sliding doors it is possible to adjust the door to one side ever so slightly to open it. However, if it was me, I would space the wardrobe out slightly and fit a filler piece of wood. Make sure to get the IKEA Pax wardrobe frames fully square and level or the doors may have to be adjusted to make them level which can result in them not opening fully. In turn this means that any internal drawers which you may or may not fit may catch against the sliding doors. I would dress the bed personally with a throw, more colour/pattern/texture for cushions etc to draw attention to the bed. If you have plug sockets there I think some wall lights would work.

I think the wardrobes work well in the wall colour so they blend in
