I’ve had some many lovely ideas on here for other rooms, I thought I’d open up a discussion about my garden room/gym which used to be our garage. We are currently waiting for Wood to arrive to do a rustic look of wood cladding on the back wall and my idea is to paint/sand some of the cladding some dusty pinks and blues to incorporate these cushion colours. At the other end of the room though is our gym area and so I wanted to try to separate the two rooms but not with a structure, just possibly a colour block on the white wall where the orange matting starts. The whole white wall is too white but we need this in the gym end as there is not much natural light (mirrors are going to be placed on the opposite wall). Ideas for the garden room wall would be much appreciated (maybe just some mixtiles, or some words or paint patterns (bearing in mind the rustic wood on the back wall) or just some sort of decor to separate the two areas. Any thoughts please?

I would not paint on the cladding, but use the dusty pink for the ceiling in the sunroom bit and the navy for the upper/lower half of the gym (could use rough roller edges or something creative) or just the full back wall. Will the orange mat stay?

I think you are trying to make a building with traditional construction look like it has been constructed in an industrial way. If you remove the plasterboard I think you are expected to find a large void with ductwork and metal rails containing the electrical wiring- I think you might be disappointed and find the wood beams holding up the floor above, some insulation and 22mm central heating pipes. If you want the industrial look you might need to fake it- assuming there is enough ceiling height you could hang a metal grill below a dark painting ceiling

Is the building insulated? If not I would go for external insulation and rainscreen cladding (cedar, larch, thermawood, Hardieplank... loads of options!) I would go for - Double sliding/French doors on the office/playroom side - Partially glazed door for the shed storage. - Gravel the side and front of the building - Trailing plants along the side to improve the view out of the windows. I’m just about to start a garden office and we’ve gone for insulated roof panels, a simpler way to have an insulated finished roof without the need for multiple roof joists and all the necessary layers to make up a cold/warm roof! If you can, I would increase the pitch of the roof to at least 5 degrees, add some overhang all around (especially the front) and install guttering and a soak away. If you’re up for the work, I’d reseed the garden and add some topsoil. - Raised beds down the sides - Paint/stain the weathered fence panels - Maybe some nice tiles or pavers on the patio with a table and chairs

Option one looks achievable and won’t impact other areas adversely. Option two will make you garage obsolete, and only gain you a room approx 2mx8m . Unless you bring garage into front line of house and the use the rear of garage as garden room /gym ( no plumbing on that side so not much other use ) but I don’t think this will add value. Option three needs exploring. Yes would make the space more 2021 but will that add value ? Might make it more saleable if you stuck with neutral colours and style . Think who you are selling too. Parents with stay at home teenagers/young adults … ergo bedroom space and car parking are premium bits - so my vote is option one - with option three if needed to sell . Assuming this is what you want -to sell at a higher price .

Hi Kerry, lucky you having a garden room and gym - how lovely! I'd be inclined to keep it simple as there's quite a lot going on in the room already. I'd go with something like this https://www.younghouselove.com/colorful-planked-wall-treatment/ at the garden room end, and mirrors at the gym end. And avoid the temptation to add anything else other than soft furnishings etc. Is there any reason the mirrors can't go on the wall you've shown us? You have that bit of wall which juts out which could provide a natural break between the two finishes. Perhaps because of the layout of where the TV is and you want mirrors in front of you when following a workout on TV I guess? - in which case the edge of the mirrors could just line up with the edge of the orange flooring. I have a pet hate of words on a wall but that's one of those personal preference things! But (also personally) I wouldn't want a lot of distracting stuff on the wall behind me when working out in front of a mirror. Especially as any words would be backwards. So I'd keep that wall plain white and this would also help bounce light around.

I may have misunderstood the layout of the room as it's not easy to piece it together from the photos, but hope I've broadly understood it.

Rinked - I was about to say, oh my goodness, those rooms are just like mine!! And then realised! 🤪 The orange matting will stay so it’s quite tricky to get colours to match. I didn’t think about painting the ceiling, that’s an option.

Hedgehog99, ah, I didn’t think about the wording being backwards, yes that would definitely be a no no as it would throw us off. This was our garage and we have extended it down our drive to have created this lovely huge space.
