ED Thank you for your posts, As a quick guide when comparing the efficiency of steel doors to timber or UPVC doors , the U -value should be looked at, the lower it is the more energy efficient the door would be. For doors where more than half of the whole door area is glazed (patio), look for a U value of 1.8 W/(m²K), or better (lower). The U- value of our steel doors is 1.50 W/m2K The U – value for standard external wooden door would have a u-value of 2.5-3 W/m2K The U – value for UPVC doors will be between 0.9 – 1.5W However, our steel Windows and Doors got thinner and more delicate frame. Their slender lines appear to lose weight and give lightness to the frames, emphasizing the transparency of a facade. This elegance is difficult to match with the bulky profiles of alternative materials.

Thanks all... we are changing our kitchen/dining room windows and doors to be grey aluminium so would quite like top match. we can lock open current does but don't feel secure as they are really cheap doors and 20+ years old. I did consider the French door window but think look bit old fashioned. was thinking a 3 panel door with middle one tilting and opening. we rarely use as a door. Struggling to source anything.

My sister’s extension is almost complete. Outside she has had the patio raised up to meet the sliding doors (no step) and at the end of the patio she has had a set of steps leading down to another seating area. It’s all plain concrete at the moment until she has it paved. So in effect there are no awkward steps immediately from the house door. Hope that make sense?

I like the wall, so if it were mine I would leave the wall as it is and then add the fence at the end of it carrying on up the garden. Perfect place for a garden Mirror but I would imagine your neighbours won’t be impressed! You could take up a few paving slabs and plant some shrubs against it to soften the effect.
