Dark landing- shall I add borrowed light from the bathroom?

I have a dark landing at the very top of the stairs. I use it as a very small office but want to bring some daylight into it. one of the walls backs onto a bright bathroom. What are your thoughts about knocking through to bring borrowed light into the landing. Privacy in the bathroom should be ok as it could be high up or frosted glass.

What about a light tunnel from the roof through the loft into the ceiling?

Thanks Ricky. I was thinking of that too but thought it might be a lot more expensive.

You've done a great job so far, I'd just leave it. Any potential buyer will have their own ideas and could quite possibly take all the tiles off, new or not. Most buyers will also be happy to paint the odd wall a different colour. The best way to sell a house is to have it super tidy & clean, a nice diffuser or candle (just a plain smell such as vanilla), a realistic price (ask 3 land agents for prices and don't go for the highest) and the house will sell in it's own time. Also, be firm as to your lowest price and don't tell the land agent what that is until necessary! : )

Thank you everyone! chantelle- I love the design but thinking more brass/gold than silver. Definitely liking the picture rail and chandelier though! Alison- clever use of space there! Love the dark colouring. Headsters- loving the photo and definitely the sort of look I'm thinking. Where did you get the vanity from? Really nice. inga! Your such a tease! (((Sob sob))) love the photos, well all of them aside from the one that I have the space for. :( i should seriously just consider just getting a shower as I know this will look better then cramming a bath in but with a toddler and a concern for resale (especially due to prime school catchment) I am hesitant. Mirrors are a great idea and I do like the shape of the bath in last photo- traditional vibe. if you feel my pain for the bathroom situation then you will be even more saddened to know the kitchen dimensions! lets just say I had better not put on any weight as I may get lodged in cabinet to wall! any ideas on antique looking vanity units and gold brass looking taps would be appreciated. thanks so much to all x

Hi Senspasce and thank you my husband works for a large tile manufacturer and the tiles where purchased on slight seconds and a great tiler who works all over the world did the tiling beautifully. The design was copied from the company brochure so I knew it was foolproof design in its day which was over 20yrs ago so not done so bad really certainly had my moneys worth. The window is very heavily obsurced glass with leaded design so does not need blinds which cannot be fitted as casement to window is not deep enough I have had curtain treatment on expandable rod but like the light and openness. I prefer a bath we use to have shower on bracket with a shower curtain when I had new mixer and taps I did away with them to open the room up and getaway from water mold building up we use bath mat on floor when showering and not a problem with no screen a lot less cleaning too never a problem without them.

One needn't necessarily "compromise" between bath and shower here; they're not entirely trivial to find but a small number of manufacturers make _square_ (or at least, near-square / wide) shaped bathtubs (Japanese soaking tub style) at about 120cm width. I've found: https://www.livinghouse.co.uk/acatalog/square-lounge-bath.html https://www.omnitub.co.uk/products/omnitub-duo-plus Such make a very luxurious bath (if money's no object, even a whirlpool / steam shower setting) while also providing more than ample space for great showering. Yes, you'd probably need to have some small steps built to enter the bath. And a concern would only be whether the floor is strong enough (when used as a bath, it makes a difference whether there's 300l or 150l water in the tub). Diagonally-installed corner baths may also be an option (quite a bit cheaper), something like: https://victoriaplum.com/product/orchard-wharfe-corner-bath-1200-x-1200 which would also allow a better shower experience than a 70cm-wide standard bath. Not as deep as a soaking tub / wouldn't need steps. If going for something like that, I would actually "box-off" the corner and turn it into shelving for storage, so the bath turns into a bit of an "enclosed niche", something like: I wouldn't go for a freestanding bathtub; the narrow spaces would make it challenging to clean.

Years ago many houses were built with borrowed lights over the top of all the doors on the landing. It’s possible to do it.

A cheaper and quicker option may be to replace the door with a frosted glazed one.

We have 2 doors with borrowed lights above them and it transformed a dark hallway into a brighter one. Only thing to consider is fire regs - if in doubt install fire glass. Also whether light coming in through the borrowed light in the summer months would cause any disturbance at 4am!
