1930s semi knock through kitchen dining - show me your projects!
Dear all,
We have just bought a 1930s semi and are looking to knock through the kitchen and dining room to create an open kitchen / dining space. We aren't going to extend at this point, so just within the footprint of the house itself (although will add a side extension at some point for a utility / extra bedroom and downstairs shower room and toilet).
Does anyone have any pictures of similar projects as most we look at also have an extension, which we aren't doing due to garden space.
I have enclosed pics of the dining and kitchen space so you can see why we want to tackle this pretty fast!!

Comments (3)You’re trying to fit quite a lot in to what looks like a relatively compact space.. Perhaps prioritise the kitchen/diner for this room - don’t forget there will still be a living room at the front of the house. I would suggest leaving the kitchen where it is (this will help with budget) but still take out the wall as you’d like. Maybe closing off the exit door from the kitchen so that you can run units the whole way down that sink wall and have the island where the cooker is shown at the moment. Comments (8)Congratulations on your new home! Great plan. My house is 1930s and the kitchen was minuscule! One day we decided to knock down the wall between the tiny kitchen and the living/dining room. Best thing we ever did. We blocked up the wall (apart from the door) creating a kitchen/diner at the back and the living room at the front. I sometimes wonder if we should have left it open plan? That’s a thought. I think swopping the kitchen and dining room over would be better. Of course it will cost more due to moving all the pipe work, but it would fit better. Finding a really good builder is the hardest part. You could ask for recommendations from family, friends and neighbours. You could also ask for recommendations on your local Facebook Town Group. There are groups like Trustatrade.com but I’ve not heard good things about such groups. Once you have a list of builders 🙏 you can draw up a list of work you want them to do and get three quotes. Comments (8)Hi there, I’m assuming the first image I’ve attached is the original footprint of the house and is currently structurally sound. With that in mind I’d work around that and use the money to demolish and extend as in the 2nd image. The old kitchen is simply how I would use the space, everyone’s different and you might prefer the utility straight off the kitchen with no larder and a WC straight off the entrance hall....See MoreHelp with our 1930s semi!
Comments (10)My house is 1930s, similar to yours. Could you resite the toilet (and maybe the boiler?) to under the stairs - a downstairs toilet is so useful. I knocked down the wall between kitchen \ dining room and it was a bit dark and needed big steel support. I regret opening up under the stairs - nowhere to put a downstairs toilet, so I'm now knocking down the narrow extension (like where your toilet was) and extending out a bit further going all the way across. Major job to add a downstairs toilet \ utility for when I'm old and infirm, and to get more light from the previous extension. Hope I've explained it - I don't know how to do drawings or show what I mean on yours - sorry....See Moreteeps74
