Kitchen Island - hob or sink?
Comments (58)@Damian Farrell, the induction hob I've had since... what.. July or August? I think? Not that long. Took a while to get used to it, having always cooked on gas. Advantages: very quick, easy to clean, you can let it automatically turn off after a certain time. Disadvantages: sometimes the pans make annoying noises, has something to do with the resonance of the magnetic field I think? I don't know. But it can be a bit annoying. Make:Schott-Ceran, but the downdraft is from a Dutch company called Airo Design. Don't think they export to other countries. Anyway, almost every company does them now. Bora gets good reviews, Miele, Siemens... The videos on youtube show that the steam goes down and you think, yeah... right... But it really does go down. It works just as good, if not better than a regular one that is over the hob. I'm happy with it....See MoreHob in island pros and cons
Comments (14)We ummed & ahhhed over this a few months ago - especially after reading all the opposing views in various Houzz discussions. I was desperate to get rid of our horrid noisy fan hanging down above a peninsula, so didn’t want to end up replacing it with something similar! I went in to the kitchen designer adamant the hob would be around the edge of the kitchen... then I saw the Neff induction hob with the integrated down-draft extractor in action at the showroom! (I’m such a sucker!) So after some cheeky negotiations (husband and kitchen company!) we are going with that. I figured a fan much closer to source can’t be a bad thing, the noise is far less ‘in your face’ as it’s not at height, the induction hob blends into the flat worktop plus you can chuck all the filter parts in the dishwasher - winner. I was mindful of some of the safety advice given on here re splashes whilst cooking if people are sat at the island; so it’s wide enough that you are very much away from the hob if you’re directly opposite the cook. But the main thing we did was offset the hob at one end of the island and are having the seating around the opposite corner at the other end. Hope that helps! :-)...See MoreSink of hob in island unit
Comments (8)We regularly position hobs and sinks to suit different circumstances - for example - in Heathers kitchen the hob suited the island better as they were social people and cooking and entertaining were a key part of the whole room design. In Carolina’s kitchen it was more a bank of tall storage on the perimeter wall with a long peninsula that was ‘where it all happens’ as that suited that whole room area, and their family. In my own kitchen my island is purely for prep and the cooking and sink are both on the perimeter walls ! If you cook really fragrant food - then lots of people who do prefer to vent straight outside via a wall - but sometimes you can vent strait up though a flat roof ! So no one size fits all. It’s s combination of what suits you and your building and circumstances ! I think we will stick with one large sink, our old kitchen had a 35cm wide sink and no small sink, it was fine but when we needed to wash up our large saucepan which couldn’t go in the dishwasher it was a nightmare because it didn’t fit! Black sink would be nice but would be concerned about limescale as we do get quite a bit! Possibly we might be able to make the sink unit 800mm then can have a big sink then a little sink - will have to check if it fits as we still need a decent amount of circulation room around the island. MATH - I love that splashback! Do you mean have the brass directly behind the hob and then the rest of the wall tiles? I suppose if we use a lighter grout if the tiles are not directly behind the hob it is less likely to get mucky. We were originally going for just brass for the handles as don’t want to overdo the whole brass thing but will have a think about it! Watermark - omg your taps are beautiful! I think we are set on a cheap basic tap for the kitchen but looking for some nice brass taps for the bathroom so will send an enquiry through!...See MoreLouise West
