New windows with mock tudor house query.

Hi all,

I have noticed how great some of the helpful responses have been when people have asked for some inspiration with their house upgrades and updates. So, I'm hoping you may be able to assist us with some inspiration as well.

We moved in to our mid-nineties house a year ago and have been focussing on the inside mainly. This is now finally getting there but soon we will be looking at changing the windows.

Currently, the windows are all brown timber which, to be fair, have been well maintained by the previous owners but are starting to reach the end of their life. We also don't like the brown, especially on the inside (which I appreciate could be painted). Anyway, we now intend to change the windows.

The insides of the windows will be white so that's easy. However, it's the outside colour which we are less certain about. The brown is going whatever happens.

We have changed the front door (as the old one did not feel remotely secure) and we have gone for a pebble grey (RAL 7032) door and frame by the English Door Company. We think the door works with the brown features on the house such as the pillar outside and the mock tudor boards etc. However, we are less certain about whether it would still work if we change the windows to this colour as well. Do also note that the mock tudor is only on the front of the house. The sides and back of the house are just brick.

I know some people prefer for a front door to be a different colour to the windows but I am less worried about that. So, what do people think - pebble grey windows or something else?

Also, do we leave the mock tudor boards brown along with the fascias and so forth or do we change the colour on these as well? If so, what colour do people think would work?

Budget constraints may mean we can't afford to change the boards and fascias at the same time as the windows but won't know until we start getting quotes and also once we have decided what we actually want.

Any suggestions would be welcome as we are looking for inspiration and struggling a little.

I did see someone had posted a not dissimilar house with grey(ish) windows and garage doors and I thought it worked. I also thought it may work even better against brown rather than black mock tudor of this house. Photo of the other house below from a previous post on this site.

The pebble grey colour looks lovely on your house, and I think matching windows would be perfect. I'd probably leave the facias and boards brown and see how it looks with the new windows.

I quite like it when people have heritage style windows in a contemporary colour and paint the beams to soften the look. I think by keeping traditional windows but updating the colours you sit comfortably in the streets cape while transforming the house.

We had diamond leaded on the bays of our 30s semi. I hated them and was so glad when we could finally afford to replace them. We also ensured the new windows had the correct number and size of panes, as the ones we removed weren't the same as the originals (two panes rather than three across the front) and looked completely wrong. It felt like prison bars had been removed. If you don't like diamond leaded I would get rid and get something else that goes with the house - I think the advice above is good. Think about frame colour, width and number of panes.

I agree with darker - I think the reason the light door PP posted looks good is the style. A light colour with a modern design wouldn't have the same effect. This a Cromwellian house in Herefordshire fitted with one of our stainless steel Letterplates and the door colour looks great with the black and white. The porch timber is paler than the rest of the house timbers (you can just see the black window frame to the right) and is a modern addition but as it's still a shade of grey it all works well together. Have fun deciding!

Although this house is being pigeon holed as Tudor revival it is really only a nod to that age since the surviving Tudor houses are massive and grand and have high ceilings, and battlements and stone mullion windows and ornate chimneys and of course these would all be inappropriate for this house. You most likely want to celebrate a design style and inject character into a property that is probably quite plain inside but you have to be careful about choosing a theme that in a room with average proportions doesn’t start to look like a parody of the look you like. So instead of saying there are Tudor elements to this house let’s try to emulate a baronial mansion instead consider what will sit comfortably in this house- I think you need to be looking at a plainer paired back elegance of arts and crafts interiors- this means something different to everyone but I think it means built in bookcases and cabinets, picture rails, unfussy cornice, wall panelling, scrubbed wood floors, panel doors, internal windows, glass light fittings, a mutated palate of colours, natural materials for soft furnishing, tiled hallways, simple bathrooms, shaker style kitchens, brick paths outside laid in a herringbone pattern, garden structures like summer houses and pergolas. I also think you can celebrate this style in a modern way- for instance there are lots of people who paint the exterior beams a pale grey and choose one of the many modern “heritage style” windows available now also in pale colours

The front door is a lovely colour. Could you do the windows in the same colour? I think the timber would look lovely in grey, cream or taupe. Looks lovely on Tudor and mock tudor houses as in Jonathan’s examples. The one below is pretty OTT but rather lovely. It’s a new build.

My first thought was that I'd aim to match your door, windows, and boards, and that the pale grey you've chosen is a good one to go for.

When I thought about it a bit longer, I remembered that your house is brick, not rendered. Pale tudor boards on a white house looks great, because it's a subtle contrast. Against brick, pale tudor boards would be a huge contrast. I wonder if pale grey windows and dark grey boards would work? It would show that you've considered the whole, rather than just replacing parts piecemeal, but it wouldn't be as stark as pale grey.

I took the pebble grey and darkened it a bit. I think it looks quite smart! You could go lighter still, maybe just a shade or two darker than the windows. You could also go darker so it's more similar to the current effect, but clearly harmonised.

Exactly my thoughts Holly. Pale boards would stand out too much against the brickwork.

Thank you to all of you. I love the houses with the lighter woodwork but, equally, I agree that it won't work on our house unless we add render which I don't really want to do. The pictures with the pebble grey windows plus the mid-grey boards are certainly worth considering.
