Looking for advice re walls, skirting, doors, and windows

My partner and I are buying our first home. The current decor isn’t too my taste but I’m uncertain on how to proceed. The skirting, doors, windows, and blue wall in particular don’t feel quite right to me…

We have a limited budget so keeping the flooring. We’ll also be getting the couches with the house.

I’m looking for advice regarding a colour scheme and what to do about the elements I’ve mentioned. My partner isn’t fussy and I like modern and more rustic, nordic, and artistic styles.

If your skirting and architrave are Oak then keep then as they are. However if they are pine then I’d paint them white. They may have been left like that for minimal maintenance.

That blue is not a nice blue. To me it’s an incipid old fashioned colour that does not gell well in the room.

You have earthy tones in the room so I would get rid of the rug and swap for a different colour and paint over that blue. Perhaps a green would suit?

Thanks! I agree re the blue. The rug shouldn’t be there when we move in, just the couches and the wood burning stove.

I was considering a sage-y green (?) or perhaps just the same grey as the rest of the walls.

Is there a reason you wouldn’t paint oak?

If I were to paint the skirting I was thinking I should also do the doors and inner windows? I don’t want to place the windows or change anything exterior (especially as the neighbouring houses are all identical to ours in deisgn).

If you look at your planning permission, there is usually a condition (probably the second one) stating that the construction must adhere to the approved plans. Therefore, if you wish to make a change as described you will need to apply for a non-material amendment under s96a of the town and country planning act or a s73 minor material amendment .... which section you need will depend on the view of the officer who determined your application. If you don't you have breached a condition of your permission which could result in enforcement action. It doesn't seem on the face of it that what you want is unreasonable so hopefully a quick s96a application which is quick and easy should be forthcoming

Thanks again everyone! I agree that I wasn't sure if the warm wood tones would work well with a dark floor but stumac23 your family room looks great!! I think it looks like a surprisingly good combo! I still think white would look good too but it may be best to leave the bay window frame alone. Unsure. I guess I'll see what it's like once the walls and floor are done

@rinq natural wood would have been nice if we had wood windows but unfortunately they are all white pvc, doh! I like the white with the dark navy theme though and I can add in black and some greenery and other colours into the room in decor to liven it up a bit. *****I just have to choose a carpet colour now!! The griege I was going for doesnt work with the navy - makes it feel a bit drab. Wasn’t going to go with silver grey but now the walls are blue, do you think this is the best colour??

That dark mahogany look used to be popular but not so much now. I would paint as much of the woodwork as possible, that is skirting, architrave dado rail. You don’t only have to paint them white and it’s very fashionable now to paint them the same colour as the walls but in the correct woodwork paint. By all means leave the oak doors as they are if you love them. White woodwork does look fresh and you will find it will brighten and cheer up a room no end.

Yes a sage/y grren would look nice. Oak skirt and arc is not cheap so it would be a shame to paint over it. The intention is for it to stay Oak coloured not white. Pine on the other hand gives off an orange colour which is unpleasant and looks cheap.

You could paint the doors or leave them as they are.

It’s difficult to tell from the images but the architrave doesn’t look the same shade as the doors so perhaps bearing that in mind paint them.

Yeah the architrave doesn’t match at all! It gets pretty ’wild’ throughout the rest of the house too. There’s different wood floors and some of the doors and skirting have a dark stain. It doesn’t look bad as such but I personally like having things feel more cohesive.

There’s also a bathroom that the previous seller didn’t get round to updating and another one that is VERY blue.
