Black Beam Renovation - Secret system

Hi,

I have a period cottage that has black beams throughout that I would like to lighten.

Has anyone used this "secretive method" that doesn't cause any mess or involve sand/soda blasting.

I've seen somewhere that it can lead to phony looking beams, but it looks pretty good on the before and after pictures on said companies website.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.
