What would you do with the oak panels in my dark hall?
Comments (51)We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it...See MoreWooden entrance hall floor (and wall panels)
Comments (5)The citrus stripper is softer than the caustic strippers. However, the caustic strippers are easily available. You will need to do a small test area as the chemicals may react with oak to form dark patches. It may be worth having a word with the technical department at Liberon who do a range of strippers and waxes. I would ask them if they have a non slip wax as polished wax can be notoriously slippery when first applied. You will see I'm avoiding sanding because you will remove all the patina fibres from the surface, but if you must I can ask our flooring contractor the best way of preserving the restored look....See MoreTransforming a hallway with European Oak paneling

Comments (10)Thanks for your suggestions so far. Here are some pictures. The wood is not original, approx 30 years old. Stained I think, rather dull now. I plan to replace the carpet, and paint the walls - the blue is very cold. Reluctant to paint the wood - too much time and effort when so many other rooms also need attention!...See Moresarahmccann72
