Comments (8)Would it be possible to take down the wall between the kitchen and the unsued space and extend the kitchen out a bit? Or if not, put in an internal window sized opening with a counter top, barstools one side and worktop and cupboards on the kitchen side. Kitchen planners are usually free, I'd get them to look at what you can do with your space and even if you cant afford to do the kitchen now, at least you know what you can do with the space and work around that idea to get a long term picture. If you want to leave the walls as they are, how about buying a 6 cube IKEA Kallax Unit and putting it beside where you first walk in to create a small divider between the entrance and the dining room. As they are open shelving, it will still let the light through but create the illusion of a proper entrance way. You could even put the unit longways, so it is low and have a row of indoor plants along the top. Restaraunts often have to work with a large open space and make the illusion of entrance ways and separate areas so its worth keeping that in mind when you're out and about!...See MorePOLL: Do you have a fireplace in your living room?
Comments (50)A flickering flame surrounded by ancient carved stone - Antique stone fireplaces add both character and a sense of place to any room, the knocks and bumps of the decades nay centuries, connecting hearth to home. Even with the advent of central and underfloor heating we crave that focal gathering point that a fireplace provides - a room without a fireplace? Nowhere to hang the picture, mirror or tapestry, no were to put your cards and certainly no place to hang your Christmas stocking!...See MoreNeed help with inglenook fireplace
Comments (38)The rest of the house is nearly restored and we are down to one of the final stalling points, what to do with the main fireplace. I've attached some better photos. Since taking them I have made a start on stripping it back. I've removed all the old fabric from one of the chairs and sanded a section back. The dark finish is not ingrained in the wood so sands of relatively easily. I'm thinking I may as well have a go at painting it before my wife makes me take it out! Its not the main living room so we won't be using the room very often. Therefore I don't think it matters that it's not really practical....See MoreAwkward living space, help please!
Comments (19)Thanks all for your comments! Lots to look through and think about. We've just recently extended out the back and put a wall up between the kitchen diner and lounge as it used to be a large lounge diner. Because of my builder changing things at the last minute the living room is smaller than I imagined and the funny indented bit has really thrown me. I hadn't thought of putting bookcases or shelving all along that wall but it would be useful storage and display space and hide the kids toys as suggested. I'm googling ikea bookcase hacks as we speak ;) The only thing is, would a tv on that wall get too much glare from the window opposite? We do ultimately need a new radiator in here as its the only one apart from my sons bedroom that wasn't changed when we extended, so I could go for a tall one on that wall as you come in the porch door. Are they as powerful as standard radiators though? I worry most of the heat will come out at the top of the room instead? Papayalady i'd love to see your entire living room view?! for inspiration :)...See MoreBecci C
