Hi Ranna,

I will admit, they can show smudges pretty easily, but it really hasn't been a big issue... I think the light marbling helps to incorporate them into its own texture. This is also the matte option, so perhaps with the glossy finish you wouldn't see them as much. I usually just wipe the counter off with a towel when I am done washing dishes/cleaning up and I am overall very happy with them!

I wouldn't waste time repainting it; I like it and, as so many others have said, think it looks flat because it's not jazzed up with accessories. I'd use bolder towels - single colour in contrasting colours - and have bigger towels out. Put something interesting on the walls - ceramic works well in a bathroom and, again, bold colours. Others have suggested plants which I agree with. It just need accents. The floor colour ties in with the surface so I think you could get away with keeping it - you can draw the eye away from it with a dramatic bathmat or rug or similar - it's got to be easy clean/wash as it will get a lot of use. It needs tweaking, not major change.

Thank you for everyone's comments, had no idea this thread would prove so popular when I started it. We are plastering this week and we have finally bought most things for the kitchen. I did find some real 'finds' though if anyone is looking. Not sure where you are based, but regarding electrical goods we researched all our own and narrowed down our list, and once we had that we looked online for the best prices for each appliance. Instead of buying from lots of different places we took it to Bentalls, who not only matched, but also cost us less, and beat some online prices with a good 'deal' price they also then will hold on to them until you need them, but if anything goes wrong you have 'bentalls' rather than several online dealers to return items to. RDO Appliances also do this if there is one near you, but i'd advise you to research prices first. Another thing we found was inserts for the kitchens. Through our kitchen supplier these were expensive, bin inserts, pull out drawers, pull out larders, even the pop up sockets, sourced seperately through ebay and online we managed to save quite a lot of money by doing this, so our fitter will still have the right things on the day, but we are not getting the inserts from the supplier. What else..... erm kitchen worktop, unbelievably the exact same worktop, same material, same cut outs etc.. same sizes differed between suppliers by 3k! so do shop around for your quartz and granite.

He has probably tried to replicate the stringer on the main stairs which is the right thing to do. In my opinion he should have stopped it lower though because it is higher than the skirting which is not great. This job looks kinda rushed in my opinion. How you react to this depends on what still needs to be done- Lots of commenters have reacted like this is the only job this guy has done for you but in reality he has likely done lots for you- what’s the other work like? If you make a fuss now about something that is not in a main room could you loose a chippy to finish more visible jobs that need doing now? Personally I would try to get all the work done now and then add this to a snagging list to be sorted at the end.

I wonder if it is a sticky mark as I can’t help thinking this is an odd place for it to get chipped (more likely a corner or edge would get chipped while manoeuvring the stone). I also thought it looked like the culprit could be adhesive tape because the shape of it. Years ago when I had granite worktops I was surprised that the fitters recommended White spirit (brush cleaner) and it was surprising what it would pick up that cream cleaner would not. (Even sticky marks). White spirit is great for non porous surfaces- this should not be used on untreated stone but your hearth looks like it has a a sealant on it (which would be the norm for domestic use to make cleaning easier and I am confident the fitter would not have tried cream cleaner if it was not sealed). Use kitchen paper with white spirit on it and wipe over the whole hearth. Remember to wipe it all off after with clean paper - remembering that this is a flammable product don’t discard the paper on the fire. As far as using stain or oil on these marks I don’t think this will work- if the lighter marks don’t clean off then they are trapped under the sealer. But the fabricator can strip off the sealer and try to even up the colour.
