Garden sloping down from the house. ideas please

Any inspirational ideas would be most welcome.
I need to tackle the garden of my 70’s house this year after moving in last year and it’s now nearly complete on the inside… the garden slopes away steeply.
I’m going to have a flat area at the top for seating/ dining etc. But very unsure how I can ‘landscape’ on a budget for a serene place to enjoy the sun? I am in Devon and I’m not sure if the clay soil makes a difference?
As you can tell, I’m not a gardener. There are a couple of trees that I’m going to keep, a Torbay palm and a beautiful Camelia bush that is no longer strangled by brambles….

hi, so sloping gardens are always a little annoying, every house i move to seem to have one they just change between front and back. In this situation it looks like you have loads of space though so lets make good use of that with some levels they are pretty easy to do that you could do these yourself if you wanted to keep costs down. Coming out the back doors you could keep the slabs and have that area as a seating area, drop down level to either a grassy bit with some flowers in a boarder and bedding boxes then at the bottom your trees and things that you want or combine the last two into one level so its just a two level garden. sort of like the picture below but with slabs at the top and the grass at the bottom.

Thank you for your thoughts Naturally Allard… of course….I’ve seen loads of photos and have never thought of reversing them as most seem to slope up the garden!

Update on our garden project! Thanks for the sleeper retaining wall ideas - we are very pleased with end result! See before and after picture. Still a few finishing touches to be done but getting there and finally have some grass growing after a winter of mud, mud, mud!!! Just need some bushes/plants to go along top edge of sleepers as it is quite a drop off the edge, dont want anything too big but just something to give it a bit of ad edge to save falls! Any comments or ideas what to use for this please?

Hi, we've recently purchased a new build house and we're struggling a bit with how to configure the garden due to the way it slopes. It's essentially just a 10m x 10m square at the moment with a few squares of pavement, and a slope from the top left towards the house and to the right fence. (see pics) We're trying to work with the level as much as possible to reduce the cost of levelling, and we're thinking of a deck in the top right (sunspot), and a raised lawn in the top left, with some steps and sleeper beds / steps around the garden to support it. (see drawing) Does anyone with any garden experience have any thoughts on how feasible something like this would be and how much it would roughly cost? Or any alternative ideas for the garden? We have a dog so a lawn is essential, and a deck or patio in the top right is pretty much a given for us. Any ideas/design tips would really be appreciated! We're looking for something quite modern, ideally with levels to create interest and reduce the levelling costs (if this even achieves that?)

Maxibird145, thanks for your reply. Hope I didn't offend you, about your Mum's input, just a bit of a bee in my bonnet at the moment about so-called "accessible" houses, shops, venues etc. All places should be accessible to everyone! (And don't get me started on "affordable" housing!!) Architects and planners often don't take into account the needs of the whole population. I am 72 (how,why??!) and have back problems, husband has mobility issues, but our garden is mostly flat, luckily. Have a set of long-handle trowel, small fork etc which were my mother's. Using them more and more these days! Incorporate some seating into whatever you do, so your Mum can sit and enjoy the garden without having to lug chairs around (eg a wide wall on a raised bed.) Hope she is happy in her new house.

I did eventually get it finished. We went all porcelain for patio. The ground was raised so easier to step out of patio doors. Still need to paint the decking or replace with composite. Now to put the green back in as we removed most of plants. I want to give some life to the gravel covered membraned soil beds. Suggestions welcome for the back fence which is north facing. Have bought some 50cm tall pots for it, maybe bamboo to contain roots. Back planter currently is full of tulips, doesn't get any sun. Going to put herbs in the middle planter. Would like a dwarf fruit tree, maybe evergreens too. Possibly alliums amongst some grasses. Thanks to those who made suggestions.

Loads of gardens seem to go up hill so if you just have a nose on google or Pinterest for two tier garden you’ll see loads of ideas and just picture your house at the top instead 😊
