it is red balau, which is sold under the broader heading of "mahogony"

@pete_bon_9838, @brian_impey, synthetic = plastic in the sense you use it. Polymer. Stretchy molecules. Plastic is acceptable as a material these days, mainly because it has well proven properties in a wide range of applications across a variety of the polymers blessed by the expression. Synthetic comes across more as, hum, well, synthetic? Pretend. Not substantial. Fly-by-night. Pixel imagery without substance maybe? The best plastic decking manufacturer I am aware of uses the word plastic in its name and would not dream of using the word synthetic. Come to think of it, when describing anything of substance, neither would I. Lecture over. 'night folks. :-)

Hi Nicole, I think that in order to get the pricing back, they all need to be pricing for the same deck and materials There are a myriad of decking solutions out there and they could all be pricing for different deck substrates and finish deck. The quality of product can vary from £15 pounds a metre to £150. so my tip would be to make sure which ever builder you go with provides you details of the materials they intend using, that way you can avoid disappointment with the overall quality once work commences. it looks like the dog will be overseeing the workmanship!! good luck!!

Stuck for ideas of what to put in the beginning of our garden after walking down some steps. Any ideas for materials that are natural, can blend in with planted environments and most importantly – won’t cause split bloody heads as I have a very boisterous toddler! I did think about the balau decking, but lost for inspiration on how to make it look nice and not just like a kids dumping ground. Stick with decking? Thin layer of sand? Just extend the lawn? Gravel feels less good as I can see sore feet and local cats using it as a toilet..:
