Painting/staining desk

Hi
we have recently moved and have an office space at home with built in wooden bookshelves which are dark brown in colour.
there is also a desk attached but we want to take it out and use our existing desk which is oak/beech in colour. we want to paint it to match the bookshelf colour.
however our desk is not real wood- can anyone let me know
whether this desk is laminate or wood veneer?
and how would i go about changing the colour?
the first picture is our desk and the second picture shows the desk colour that we want.
