Advice on painting an old desk black
Comments (36)A Yew dining table and chairs? There is a good chance that you could sell for a large amount, buy exactly what you want to replace them in your new look and have a tidy bit of money to spare. Not forced to be correct, but worth checking out first. I am a big fan of preserving, renovating and repurposing but when considering repurposing I do check this out first. Since the point of repurposing is meant to be to save money as well as reducing materials used in getting a new look, then the idea of selling them (thus not wasted) has to be looked at first. Once repurposed the process cannot be undone and the value of the item as an original is gone. Of course a lot of things are great for repurposing as they are not of a condition or design or material that others want in the current condition, so fine, modify to your heart's content - I do that too. For example I have some furniture made from pallets. I made armchairs and a coffee table from a type of polystyrene used to space large pipes during transport (I had to sell them as I got fed up of being pestered by someone who wanted them so badly). I also have a wooden chest that is 17th century - I wouldn't dream of altering that....See MoreNeed advice for painting & redecoration before move-in day
Comments (17)Wow, thanks so much for all of the amazing tips. They have really helped us out with what might work best in the house. @ Isidora Markovic We are going to treat the wooden floors and keep them dark in Colour. I thought in the kitchen, we might add some spotlights on the ceiling to brighten up the area as a short term solution. @minnie101 Thanks so much, I agree to paint the beam white to blend it into the ceiling. The grasscloth paper will definitely be going. I like the brick as a feature wall and feel the grass cloth is a bit cheap looking. I like the idea of a warm neutral colour. The previous owners shared a picture with white walls and the whole room looked rather cold. As above, I agree that spotlights and lamps will warm the room up a lot. We are based in South Africa, so have many nice paints to choose from. Delux seems to be big here. @Lyn Hickson Thanks so much, Lyn. The precious owner actually owns all of the furniture and the art work. We have travelled quite a bit and thought it might be nice to print some of our images on canvas and hag them instead of art work, so hopefully it will work well in the room. Thanks @ Man About The House - The DIY & Odd Job Handyman - The wooden panel above the arch is actually a bamboo wallpaper which we will be removing - I agree to paint it a neutral/light colour. I'm also quite drawn to a grey colour palette perhaps with some navy/neutral furniture and accessorise with yellow and wood. (not sure if this will work but just a thought). Really appreciate the feedback so far. As much as I would love to live in it first, Im too much of a keen bean and definitely want to give it a lick of paint and get the dirty work done while we have time and before the furniture gets in. Thanks for all the advice - will post some after pictures one it comes together. :)...See MorePainting mid century furniture?
Comments (13)I would just restore it. It is beautiful and painting it would be sacrilege in my eyes. If it were a country style pine unit then painting it would be the way to go, but not a mid century piece. Do you ever watch Salvage Hunters on Quest channel? They rarely paint anything, just carefully clean and restore it and then sell it on. Sometimes less is more....See MorePainting outdoor garden furniture yay or nay?
Comments (32)Hey there. Well, both options have their pros and cons. Painting your furniture can give it a fresh new look while getting new chairs and tables can completely transform your outdoor space. It really depends on your budget and personal preference. If you're looking for new furniture, I recently stumbled upon this website https://www.gardencentreshopping.co.uk/ which has a great selection of waterproof furniture. Feel free to check it out and LMK what you think....See MoreMary Ketchley
