LVT - for a hot south facing room?

Hi. We are currently having an extension built and I'm now thinking about flooring. The new bifolds will open up into our south facing garden. I like the look of LVT but am worried that it might bleach or warp in the heat/sun?

Does anyone have experience of this please? We'd rather not have to pull curtains or put down blinds during the day.

I don’t think it will warp in the sun as it’s glued down firmly but as for bleaching I would say it’s likely. I’m sure mine has toned down in colour and mine is not subject to the sun. Hubby begs to differ with me but I’m sure it’s not as dark as it was.

We’ve got warm oak Karndean in south facing kitchen/family room and adjoining conservatory. Conservatory floor has lightened (but tbh I’d expect that) but no fading in the other rooms. It all still tones in - no real issue unless you go looking for it. The conservatory flooring has been down for more than 10 years - still looks as good as new despite the sun!

I'm going to get a bad name on here for being the voice of doom...........I just like to point out pitfalls so that people are informed. The right side of the house was built as a single storey. Therefore you cannot presume that when the footings were dug, that they were dug deep enough to accommodate two storeys in the future. In fact, it's unlikely, as that would have incurred more cost. Thus, you should presume that the garage floor would need to be dug up and the footings investigated. It is most likely that the whole end would need underpinning of some sort or another / new footings etc to accommodate another floor above. As that's costly, you may wish to amend the plans for the upstairs and the down stairs and consider something more like Jonathans excellent plans. This would be my starting point, along with , as always where the accessible drains are, which as luck would have it, appear to be both front and back, so that's good news. I know that we'd probably all do something different, and I agree with Jonathan about that end. I personally would have to have the big open plan rooms at the rear........better view or not, just simply for the amount of space to move about in unhindered. I like space! If I wanted to have somewhere hot and sunny to sit, i'd have a terrace at the front as well as the back, but I wouldn't sacrifice the frontage to achieve it. If you've got a lot of space then as one of the other ladies mentioned,,,,,,,,,,,,,push a terrace far back enough so that you catch the sun.

What did everyone do re aircon or blinds? We were considering renting our house out at some point but it gets hot in summer which is not an issue for living here as you can open the doors slightly and it cools straight away but for guests - it's not that easy. Thinking of blackout blinds for sleeping but are there sheer ones which keep the light but reflect the heat?? Also aircon - anything not big and ugly that would work in a large open plan room?

Use the correct recommended "High Temperature" adhesive from the LVT manufacturer and lifting won't be a problem. UV rays is a potential issue for fading, though. The more expensive, higher quality LVT brands, such as Amtico will come with some form of UV test pass. Stick to a major LVT brand, make a few design choices as potentials and then ask your supplier (that could be us!) if the ones you have selected have passed a UV test. Ask for the manufacturer's specification/data sheet to make sure you are not being hood-winked. Reputable LVT manufacturers, in no particular order, are: Amtico Polyflor Natural Solutions If you see anything you like the look of Paul, use our contact form and ask for samples. Hello Paul, LVT in a south facing room with 5 metres worth of glazing won't cause a problem so long as you look for two things: We'd recommend going belts and braces and use a high temperature adhesive, like F Balls F48 - click here. You would normally use this in conjunction with underfloor heating and/or when in areas of huge temperature fluctuation like conservatories. We'd recommend going for one of the major LVT manufacturer brands, as they are more likely to have tested their products to be UV stable. This is what will help prevent fading in the sunlight. When you get serious with your supplier to make the purchase (and we would very much like to supply your materials, Paul), ask to see the technical data sheet for your product as you want to see for yourself that the product is UV stable. A manufacturer's data sheet should show you whether it is or is not UV stable. Major LVT brands to consider are: Amtico Karndean Natural Solutions Polyflor Best to stick to a major brand, in your circumstances, as the products will have been manufactured to high UK standards. The cheap and cheerful ones are produced, in volume, in China and do not have such stringent quality control tests carried out. Shrinkage? Doubtful. That "can" happen when using a click LVT but if you use a dryback LVT that must be adhered you won't experience shrinkage, Paul. We're cute, we're cuddly… we're the Flooring Gurus!

I think everything fades in the sun. Given it’s south facing it’s recommended you go for solar control glass which will reduce fading and control the heat
