If you're leaning more towards a pitched roof, perhaps you could extend your glazing right up into the gable to maximize the light coming in. I've attached a couple of images of projects where we have done just that. The first was necessary due to it being a listed building so we suggested an additional tiled roof would be more in keeping than, for example, a flat roof with a roof lantern. The second was on a lovely Victorian terrace in Coggeshall and again, we suggested echoing the original architecture with a pitched roof and glazed gable. If you would prefer an orangery style extension, despite some previous comments it is definitely possible to have a space that is a nice even temperature all year round, doesn't collect lots of flies and doesn't leak. We have built these for 30 years. All of our roof lanterns are available with solar controlled glass and motorised vents, plus the combination of masonry and glass (as opposed to a traditional conservatory which is mostly glass) provides a a more consistent room temperature anyway. We offer a 10 year guarantee on our joinery, glass and paint coatings (parts and labour) - that's how confident we are that it won't leak. We also use Accoya wood in our products which is incredibly durable, stable, moisture resistant, fungus proof, inedible to insects and thus incredibly low maintenance. It's definitely worth googling Accoya if you're considering going for a structure that incorporates timber joinery.

Some photos of this area of your home as it is at present would be useful, but here's a few pointers: depending on what country you are in you may need to get your neighbours permission to build up to their party wall (in the UK you definitely do) so make sure you can get them on board before progressing. depending on what direction this area is facing, and again whereabouts your home is a lot of glass could either make it unbearably hot (south facing in northern hemisphere) or very cold (north facing in northern hemisphere) so you might want to consider incorporating some solar shading or shuttering in the design, or some more unglazed elements to fill with insulation and keep it warm respectively. glazing to roofs can bring light deep into the footprint and can really lift the quality of the space, but too much glazing in a roof could result in unwanted glare, and again overheating or over cooling and can also be quite costly, so you may want to consider using it tactically rather than to the roof wholesale. If you manage to get any pictures to upload and details of what country/direction the building is in it would narrow it down a bit. Good Luck.

Thanks, really helpful. Think I know what doing, was just looking to see how and if could be done for now. In terms of light, the rooms effected would only be the master ensuite with no window and the stairs and hall as all would be internal. The main bathroom window would need moving to end of one of the wing gables. I don’t mind these rooms having light effected. The kitchen has a large window already. Yes it is a decent sized house with large rooms which could be reconfigured to utilise space more effectively but do love current layout and why fell in love with house. We really do use every room. With a growing family the main things really is downstairs layout with no downstairs toilet and don’t like walking straight into kitchen. Also the storage for such a big house isn’t great. The centre part in between the u is such wasted space and just a gravelled area. Extending upwards would give another bedroom. It isn’t totally needed to extend upwards as only for a family of 4 and already technically a 5 bedroom house. But only has 3 doubles, a single with no wardrobe space and a room used as a dressing room as would struggle to fit a single bed in. More space for guests and wardrobe space would be great and turn a home we love into the perfect home. For the extension itself would just be one front wall with gable and then roof joining. Simple. I wish!!!!! Very expensive and maybe easier and cheaper to just move house but love the place and area. Will have to move forward with some quotes but no rush as not looking to start for a while. I know it’s impossible to say how much without seeing it but what’s the guesses for the building work? Doncaster, Yorkshire 5 x 5 extension.
