My house is FREEZING - any tips?
Comments (23)Stephen Edwards makes a really good point about the thermostat, and it works both ways (ie causing the heating to come on when you don't need it, as well as going off when you do!). Thermostats are often placed in the hallway, which can be colder than the rest of the house by cold air coming in through a draughty front door. It sounds like you have systemic problems to solve, but once those are sorted out you could look at draughtproofing, paying particular attention to anywhere that affects the thermostat. If you identify your letterbox as draughty you could look at fitting one of our letterbox solutions (we do a lovely stainless steel front letterplate as well as an inner letter box draught excluder), and if you have a pet that's going in and out through a draughty, rattly old catflap we do a pet door too. Hope you get things sorted in time for the cold weather!...See MoreKitchen / Dining Room to Conversatory dilemma
Comments (4)The trouble is - that as it stands it won't be very thermally efficient but - currently by the look of it, it will be exempt from the thermal efficiently regs because It's separated from the house by an external-type door. ( ie it's not part of the house ) As soon as you remove the door,/open it into the kitchen, you remove the exemption and therefore it may become unviable . If you rebuild it I think the 25% ratio for glass may not equate to a conservatory again - I'd strongly suggest you speak with an architect for clarification first !...See MoreNew kitchen / diner layout - which would you choose?
Comments (5)That's great if you can be flexible with the windows. I personally prefer option 2 but would swap the island and the dining area. A bigger utility would always be my choice. If possible, going for an integrated fridge/freezer would give you more space. I've 'guestimated' where the pillar is... could be in the totally wrong place! I am thinking tall units with double oven/fridge/freeze (built-in) on the entry wall with the pocket door. Or go for combined fridge/freezer and use one tall unit as a mini pantry cupboard which could hide away microwave & kettle. (Light Blue) Sink under the first window (can make it smaller) and then hob could also back wall if you don't want it on the island. Block up the second window potentially. Then can have more tall units by the dining table or low level with open shelves for the dining area. (Dark Purple). If you have tall units there, you can add a cupboard and have kettle etc underneath where the window used to be. Funnily enough, this is what we've planned for our kitchen. Another option, (although I know not everyone likes this style, is run the table off the island). I personally really like this design....See MoreAdvice please on best way to extend our kitchen?
