white spots on mortar

Hi everyone,

Another front of house question! Google is not my friend when it comes to trying to find out what is causing these white spots on the mortar.. I thought it may be lichen, however I can’t appear to find any searches that look like this. There are none in the brick work itself and it only appear to be impacting the front of the house.

Any ideas and how to remove if possible?

Helenandy126: Travis Perkins came in at the best, but I have a trade account with them and I bargain hard. If I remember, Furness sold direct but they just couldn't get anywhere near what I wanted to pay. There are thousands of bricks out there, you just need to narrow it down but go with the big names such as Hanson or Ibstock as they'll have close copies of most bricks out there. I'm not sure if the merchants still do this but once you give your site address and your brick, they register it with the manufacturers and then no other merchant can quote, meaning your stuck with their price. That's why you'll then be able to find a close match with another manufacturer so that you can then get another price for the different brick.

Might be pva used by the plasterer. . I can't tell from the pics but we had areas that looked like splashes that didn't cover well with paint at all. The solution was to keep adding coats of paint!

Could be lichen. I had awful black spots all over my sandstone, it looked worse after I'd cleaned it. Black Spot remover sorted it out, apparently it can be white too. It may not be, but this but it tends to proliferate in porous surfaces and Sandstone is porous.

Here’s your answer according to the expert 😊:They are salts. They will probably disappear on their own in time. It’s quite common.

My brother thinks maybe lime in the mortar or white stones? He’s not sure.

Thanks Daisy! The house was built in 1970 are salts common so long after the build? I hope it is as that’s a lot easier than lichen to deal with :)

Thanks Sonia! I’m not sure either - we thought stone but it rubs away quite easily in places and doesn’t appear embedded in the mortar itself..

Colour happy I’m going to look at the product also for the patio as have a fair bit of the black stuff lurking!!

Salts are common. Sometimes they appear on the brickwork too.
