Under stairs dilemma
Comments (19)I would always rather invest in stunning furniture than spend money on more permanent changes. In my experience you can make any space look great with the right furniture and decor. Rather than spend money on something structural I would work with the space you have with furniture that works better than the heavy farmhouse style. The nicest furniture in the room is the sideboard so I would build on that. I'd look at something like Gubi Beetle dining chairs to bring in an organic streak. Not cheap but cheaper than building in storage (the next best option) or enlarging the window which won't make much difference - and you can take them with you if you move! You could look at Made.com for a cheaper but complementary table. Then a decent lampshade - perhaps Tom Dixon Etch - a side lamp on the sideboard and lots of plants and pots to empathise the organic, cosy nature of the room. Finish with some pictures in the wall and you have a lovely, cosy, earthy room that feels like being down Alice's rabbit hole rather than under the stairs. Good luck....See MoreUnder stairs enclosed storage
Comments (7)What I did in the end...I had bespoke cupboard made. The tall cupboard on the left you can walk into and behind the tv. And the others are normal size apart from the top which are shallow and the tall cupboard in the right is actually full height and really shallow for my colouramas (tall background paper rolls) Sorry not the next photos on the grey day but you can get the idea...See MoreCellarette stair storage advice needed
Comments (3)Hi Matt, do you have a budget in mind? I can't quite see what's at the bottom of the steps, but I would be tempted to consider building bespoke storage. Not sure what's on the other side of the room, but option 1 could be splitting the cupboard in half - so you would access the under stairs storage from the other side by creating a new opening under the stairs, then have a full height cupboard but half depth from the current door opening. If that's not feasible, maybe building in some bespoke storage E.g. directly opposite the door, full unit from top to bottom, I would put a clothes rail for coats in the top half of the cabinet (perhaps with a fabric shoe shelf hanging to one side), then some doors in the bottom half for vacuum/buckets/etc. You can hang hooks on walls for mops/ironing boards/etc. If you need to gain a bit more wall space for hooks, perhaps you could have the door opening the other way around, or if that wouldn't work, replace it with a folding door? If that's all outside of budget, then you could use wall hanging storage solutions, or over door solutions as per photo....See MoreUnder stair storage
Comments (2)Some cube units at the rear could work for shoes. Baskets for each person maybe? The coat rail might do better a little higher. I see there is a rack for the iron board, use it to keep that item clear of the floor. Use of the walls to hang but would not look to shelving as this would only make it harder to get to the rear....See MoreSonia
