Cellarette stair storage advice needed

We have a cellarette which is essentially a set of stairs going into a small space which is probably 3x1 sqm.

As you can see, it's a mess and I want to tackle it with better storage solutions for items we need to put out of sight, but have easy access to. (The rest of the rarely used items can be stored lower down in the small storage area.)

The items we need easy access to are: shoes, some coats, mop & bucket, hoover and a drying rack.

Does anyone have photos or advice on what you've done with a similar space?

I'm thinking of attaching pegboards to the walls and then using hooks to hang most items.

Hi Matt, do you have a budget in mind?

I can't quite see what's at the bottom of the steps, but I would be tempted to consider building bespoke storage. Not sure what's on the other side of the room, but option 1 could be splitting the cupboard in half - so you would access the under stairs storage from the other side by creating a new opening under the stairs, then have a full height cupboard but half depth from the current door opening.

If that's not feasible, maybe building in some bespoke storage E.g. directly opposite the door, full unit from top to bottom, I would put a clothes rail for coats in the top half of the cabinet (perhaps with a fabric shoe shelf hanging to one side), then some doors in the bottom half for vacuum/buckets/etc. You can hang hooks on walls for mops/ironing boards/etc.

If you need to gain a bit more wall space for hooks, perhaps you could have the door opening the other way around, or if that wouldn't work, replace it with a folding door?

If that's all outside of budget, then you could use wall hanging storage solutions, or over door solutions as per photo.

Sorry the plan I uploaded was an old one there are now byfold doors across the back so the TV is now going where the under stairs cupboard was this seemed to be the only place it could go where you can see it from the seating area the dining table and the breakfast bar but it's quite a distance from the seating area what's your views on this ?

Hi all, Thank you so much for your posts and ideas. I really appreciate it! Well 6 years have passed and we still haven’t made any structural changes as we started a family instead! But we think we’re ready to make some changes now (just when its become more expensive than ever to do structural works!) A few things I forgot to mention in my original post is that the roof is a butterfly/London roof so its not a traditional pitched roof and would be expensive to make convert it. Plus we had to unexpectedly replace the entite roof this year because it was causing problems and didn’t have the time to think about a conversion due to the urgency 😫. The front door is next to the lounge (floor plan is upside down 🙃) I think we’re thinking of a ground floor extension now but ideally i’d love to separate out the 3rd bedroom so it has its own entrance and possibly make it bigger. The third bedroom is at a split level from the 2nd bedroom ie you have to go down 3 steps. But the roof above the 3rd bedroom is pitched and i’m wondering if its possible to extend into it and make it a study/4th bedroom. The pesky stairs still seem to be a problem! RE: John Botham thanks for your advice to be cautious as the layout differs so greatly to other properties on the street. Any advice, ideas or similar problems solved very much appreciated! many thanks SJ

If you keep the Hallway door where it is, it makes things more difficult. The toilet is best placed between lounge and Utility, so if you keep the doorway there, you would enter a long narrow space, making the basin difficult to place. Also, are you taking out the Chimney Stack?. I'd go for integrated appliances rather than stacking as you have plenty of room, and something a little like this possibly. Of course it also depends on whether or not you want access from the kitchen because of washing etc, or the Hallway because that's easier for the coats and shoes. Choice is yours.

I would be tempted to make the space into a storage cupboard. The top could become a deep window sill to have decor on. This would make the space too high for little ones to reach and therefore safer. (The storage space could continue into the eaves if you removed the door on the RH side)

Hi Karen,

I have a small budget (as cheap as possible!) - I really like the photos of the inbuilt drawers but that idea will have to be for the future.

I think the shoe rack idea would work well but need to find something that can hold boots, running trainers and walking shoes.

I’ll buy some hooks for mop and drying rack. I’ll post some photos of progress I’ve made soon
