Awkward living room layout

Hi, i have an awkward living room shape and looking for suggestions for possibly better furniture placement. there is a door to kitchen and door to hallway. Also cupboard under stairs. feel like everything is a bit disjointed. tried to get bigger rug but awkward living size means smaller rug looks and fits better. also changed hall door so opens inro room instead of walking around it which allowed snug chair to fit at window. Unable to move tv. Any suggestions welcome

We have a similar living room layout with the living room acting as a hall to kitchen and understairs cupboard.

We have our sofas facing opposite each other instead so you don’t have to manoeuvre around furniture to get to the kitchen.

Try placing the larger sofa where the armchairs are currently and the tv unit/sideboard against the wall opposite fireplace.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. I had it that way when we first moved in but has issues with the tv so had to move it. We’re unable to change location of the tv now, which is unfortunate. It’s just such an awkward room shape, feel like Iv tried everything but always come up against an issue. Thanks 😊 something for me to think about

I understand your issues with the outlets for the chandelier and the tv. I suggest that when you look at furniture for the room you consider its scale. Do NOT buy furniture that is oversized or too large for the space. Look at apartment scaled furniture so that I doesn't overwhelm the room. A scaled down couch, a comfortable chair, an ottoman that can serve as a coffee table or extra seating. Neutrals. You can always add color with an area rug that will look nice on your floors and pillows, art, etc. things that you can change out as your taste changes. I am curious if you have any electrical outlets in the center of your floor? It might be possible to float your couch with its back facing the north wall and the dining area, and facing out towards the windows and view. And then you could put your tv between the windows on a media stand and not on the north wall. In any event, one of those arc lights might be nice for this space, too. I like the odd point in your living room! It adds character to the space! Embrace it!

Oh dear, so many votes for changing the door! I really think we've left it too late. We're due back in next week...this is why you should think of living room layout at the start of a project! Ultimately, the middle (darkest) room will be the t.v room - don't know if this changes anything?but for the next few years it'll be a playroom so we can shut the door on the smallies' mess. My husband always wanted to close up the door on this front room but I resisted as I liked the idea of entering the rooms separately. Was I wrong? We are a family of 5 with extended family visiting frequently so quite a lot of seating required. It seems that if I'm not willing to move the doors at this stage, then my least bad option is the corner sofa under the window, TV in opposite corner, perhaps with one door always shut into the playroom (there will be glazed panels at the top of this door so luckily light can still get through). The lady in the sofa shop suggested then placing perhaps a table and lamp in the bay, is this the best we could do? To add to the pressure, there's a sale on the large sofa, reduced by 1k, but only until the end of the week! So not much time to look into option of built-in day-bed. So... here goes: I've used the dimensions of the Ikea Klippan sofa, so something around that size should be okay. Also put in an Ikea armchair, and I'm thinking that you could incorporate the TV into the bookcases. Perhaps you could create a bench in the niche where the patio doors are, with a small dining table and a chair. I've seen people using Ikea (I'm not working for them, I promise) Kallax shelving units to create dining benches. If it's really 1.19 m, it would fit exactly (fingers crossed). Anyway, good tip is to make a paper version of furniture you've seen, using (news)paper and sticky tape and put it on the floor in the room to see how much floor space it will take up.

Hi Simon, that is such a lovely room and I love the wall colour. Lovely and bright too. You say you’d love two sofas facing each other, but in reality it would make watching the tv almost impossible and there will be little space for access to each end of the room. If I did that in my living room, the tv would end up over my shoulder and the other sofa would block a door! I’m not sure how wide your bay window is with the high armchair, but I wonder if you could fit a small sofa there instead? I assume you haven’t already got a suitable sofa elsewhere. You could bring the leather chair at the other end of the room forward near to the sofa and place the tall armchair in its place? And of course the teepee must take pride of place 😊

Hi Emma. would you consuder moving the door into the sitting room ?

Putting it on the diagonal wall, if the width allows

Then you could potentially create 2 zones - a TV area and also an entertaining/relaxing area

Obviously this comes at a cost and some upheaval !

Do you need quite so many seats? It does look a little cluttered. I would only keep the most comfortable sofa, and two further seats, and move the rest of the furniture round until it felt right, functions well and feels spacious
