Can I live with this patio for five years?

Hello all. I've got a dilemma. I think the advice is to get the house sorted before the landscaping, right. The patio off the back of our house is very tired, really lets the garden down both when outside but also when looking out from inside. Very old poor quality concrete pavers which have been damaged from power washing and which are always dirty and releasing aggregate. I've tried to seal and bind them many times over the years but they simply need to go. I also have no privacy on the patio and would love to plant screening plants and overall make it a nice place to be and to look at. The issue though is I'd love to some day build an extension, so any investment into the patio is likely to be a waste as it'd be demolished. I'm quite stuck as to what to do. The extension would be like a five year out project but I don't want to not enjoy the back for all that time. Looking for opinions. I guess it all boils down to money unless there are any creative ideas? Was thinking a cheap patio makeover (like decking tiles or equivalent) and then pots for plants but not sure I'll get the finish I want.

Hi there,

I think that unfortunatelly, any temporariamente solutions that you try (like the decking tiles) will not look very good, especially if the patio is now uneven (so not a good investment).

Would you maybe like to build a patio somewhere else in the garden? I am assuming that this patio is as you leave the house (and hence part of it would be lost with the extension). I dont know the size of your garden, but have you considered a second patio area (maybe to catch the sun at another part of the day or even to seat on shade)? This second patio area could be your main seating area untill you finish the extension abd then be part of the final design when you get to it.

Hi there, You could still have curtains if you have your heart set on them, but perhaps opt for just one which bunches along the right hand side. I can see you struggle for space on the left. Alternatively, you could soften the look with blinds instead. Pleated blinds fold up really small so are a good choice for patio doors, but you could also have pretty much anything (including Roman blinds which take up more room when stacked) if you fit it outside of the recess rather than close to the window. Hi. It's a nice room. I'd centre the dining table on the rug. Move the bird art to over the sideboard and add a table lamp. I'd pull the sofa out a little and add an arc lamp. Personally I'd change the cushions and throw to the burnt orange that's in the rug. You could also add a couple of navy, green and white cushions. I'd get a larger piece of art for over the sofa or perhaps add a shelf and have a few pieces of art layered in different sizes in thin dark frames to balance out with the dark furniture.. I might also swap the flowers on the side table for a lamp.

Definitely make it work for you, especially if you’re not considering selling yet. We had a similar issue when we renovated our three bedroom bungalow. We added an extension & did loft conversion but still have 3 bedrooms. We could have had four, but it would only have been a ‘spare’ room. Instead we have a large bedroom downstairs & two large bedrooms upstairs, each with ensuite & one with a dressing room. We have tripled our kitchen / living space & have a laundry room. It wouldn’t be everyone’s choice but works for us.
