Design Dilemma Kitchens

Opinion on unit height.

Hi, we are having renovation work done, including a new kitchen. I really prefer high units but a beam is causing problems. The man making the kitchen said we can:

1) Have units, up to the height of the beam.

2) Have almost ceiling height units and he will cut the extractor hood around the beam. I trust he has the skills to do this neatly.

I am tempted by option 2, but worry it wint look good. As you can see it wouldnt even be at the centre of the hood. Any ideas or similar experiences, would be great. Thank you!

Option:

have the units run below the beam, and a long panel at same level as the beam (like skirting but at ceiling level)

Like soffits? I didnt realise they are a thing until recently.

We used a local company specialising in bespoke kitchens which could fit cupboards all the way up to the ceiling. It was a more expensive option but was so much better value for money in the long-term as it gave us masses of space. A small set of aluminium steps hangs inside one cupboard. True, some of the space is less accessible on a day-to-day basis. But it is dust-free!

@Joanna Biddolph The random pouffes lol.... are all there because the house is a building site. The left one came with my suite even though didnt want it but it has storage, the middle chair is my sons that I re-upholstered for him and since building his bedroom right now, theres no-where for it, and the right one I bought for £5 YEARS ago and re-covered it... Classic G-Plan. Theyre all going and will make just one simple one (based on the left one) . @celerygirl I cant say I am a massive fan of overhead storage, and we dont need that much, although your last image looks cosy and love the red/white contrast. All mean either replacing or painting the bedsides too. The back and right walls are kind of stud, theyre drywall over 400mm thick solid external walls, 2x1" frame with foam board insulation and plasterboard. Theyre not very good. This room was full of damp due to leaky plumbing and bathroom at the end. All the pipes run around the bottom by the floor inside these walls all around the right hand side and back wall. Although the damp has gone and the fresh paint has held for a year, the plumbing is being re-done throughout the house, and its likely to mean a radiator will be going on the left side, backing onto relocated bathroom, OR a tall slim one to the right, next to the window, fed by pipes from above. Ive removed several dry-walls in this house, so building a framework, boarding and plastering is not really scary any more, nor is putting power and lights in whether its drywall or solid - the solid walls are preferable to channel because the finish is better and easier than channeling plasterboard tbh. You see I got impatient and bought carpet, this being the ONLY carpet in the house, the rest being buggered parquet or concrete with bits of underlay in places, its because the dimensions of the floor may change if I take drywall out, and a door for the en-suite to be cut, that I cant even lay this one floor right for now, and left it oversized. Project houses for you.... sufficed to say, dust is the last on my list of worries

Thanks for all the comments. In reference to drawing attention to it, it's a fair point but isn't it a bit like a skirting board? Dark wall, white skirting board, stands out. We all do it. White walls with white skirting board would look odd, no? Personally, I like the dark grey pelmet (by the way, ignore the units below, there's no worktop on them at the moment) partly because it's not doing what is always done and partly because it does act a bit like an underline. My more important other half, however, prefers the light grey. She's the boss so she wins :/

Tall units up to the ceiling can look very nice, although would function as displays mostly. Honestly standard height kitchen wall units wouldn't concern me, they might accentuate the height which is not a bad thing at all. Alternatively if you have enough storage in the base units why not skip wall units altogether? Open shelves or even nothing, just a stunning splashback

I don't think this would look too bad. Who is doing the kitchen? Can they not do a 3D for you of the space so you can see how it will look before you purchase it?

The two clients I have worked with where we have had the same dilemma opted not to cut the kitchen around the beam. This was because, when you have a white beam on a white ceiling it fades into the ceiling more and isn't that noticeable. When you cut something around it, a kitchen unit, hood etc, this leaves lines which draw the eye more and it will be more noticeable that the beam it there at all. One of the clients I was working with, had fairly low ceilings already and didn't want to make this more obvious by drawing attention to the beams. Seeing this on 3D images it became obvious and they opted to move the taller units to another part of the kitchen and we left the beam alone.
