Water leak in kitchen caused what appears to be mold (pic included)

Hi all. Just looking to get some advice. I had a water leak in kitchen and used a pump to remove it. However, a few weeks in and the the floor boards were still leaking water trapped beneath. I've since removed the floor boards and there appears to be dark black/brown looking mold across much of the floor. The plan is to remove the subfloor entirely but until then, do any of you have any tips as for how best to approach this?

I would claim on your house insurance and get them lifted and replaced.

I’m not sure what is shown in the picture….. do you have floor boards under this? Or is it a chipboard floor?

If this is just some insulation from under the carpet or laminate then rip it up and get rid of it.

If it is chipboard it might well be moisture resistant and short term a mop with some bleach will be enough until you can replace it.

And Sonia is right - this may be covered by insurance

Those are wise words Karen! am so glad it worked out for you. Love to see a photo, what colour or shade did you choose? Jools, The bitumen is a right pig, best way we found is to make it cold, so it becomes brittle, then you can scrape /chip it off. We used a window scraper, coarse wire wool and various sandpaper. We left the window open on a cold night, turned heating off in there, and you could try a cooler fan on it. Putting ice bags on it didn't work as well as we hoped. we used a round sander, but it can cause swirls, it's really awkward ! To be honest a few dips and scratches on an old floor are okay in the end, don't be too afraid of it, they are only pieces of wood stuck down on the floor, not bone china, as long as you try not to break them, or set fire to them, otherwise you can't possibly do more damage than I did, and they recovered!

A few years ago I redecorated my bedroom, new wallpaper, paint, carpet, bed, bedding, etc. I got a little over enthusiastic towards the end and decided I would vacuum the carpet, iron the duvet and put all the furnishings back in place before the kids returned from school. All began well, carpets looked gorgeous, I began to shift my little Victorian washstand and knocked over a mirror propped by its side. It tore my new wallpaper!!! I turned to rescue the mirror and heard a 'thunk', the iron had fallen off the ironing board and landed face down, on the carpet, across the vacuum electrical cord, burning through both!!! Unthinking, I grabbed the iron and BANG,!! I was on the other side of the room - thank god for circuit breakers!!! So, I now had torn wallpaper, a burnt out iron, a blown up vacuum cleaner, a burn in my new carpet and shock!!! I hid the burn in the carpet with a pair of pretty shoes and no one noticed that for weeks, lol!!!

Hi ED, Thanks! Yep the eye of faith is crucial with winter garden makeovers! It'll be loads more plant dominated in a year or two. There's already a pump in the pond, which works as a standalone fountain, but can be adapted to power a cascade on the wall behind. We're having all sorts of whacky ideas like building a 'marble run' style sculpture incorporating all our favourite things, (archaeology, sci fi etc) or a commissioned metal sculpture that looks like a steel version of Virginia creeper.

This may come under buildings insurance. Do not hesitate to claim, and no it won’t increase your premiums by a massive amount.

If water has got in to the subfloor first thing is to dry everything out. Have you used a dehumidifier. It can take a while to dry things out, but once things are dry you can check the condition of the boards. The mould as Jonathan says can be cleaned away. In your photo it doest look like the boards have swollen or moved, so likely to be okay once dried .

Just to add l would be cautious of plinths and base end panels staying on the damp/wet floor. They will blow and you will end up having to replace them too.
