durability of cherry cabinets

This is a gorgeous kitchen. I am currently planning almost the same colors with American cherry floors and cherry cabinets. The cherry floors that I already have are beautiful and at love them but they are not quite as hard as other woods so I was considering using alder or maple with a cherry stain for the cabinets. However, the cabinet supplier I am working with does not offer a cherry stain on other woods. Are there any considerations or recommendations you have for maintaining cherry cabinets? Is there rally that much of a difference?

This project is now 17 years old and the solid cherry cabinets still look great. Keep in mind that cherry will darken considerably over time.
In this photo the cabinets and Island are American Cherry, however we chose Brazilian Cherry for the floors to add some contrast.
I would probably not try to match the floors and the cabinetry. Instead try choosing something that would offer some contrast.

Lacquered is the superior finish but you end up paying significantly more for it. It can however offer bespoke colour options and personally I prefer the way the edges look. In my opinion you notice the difference most on high gloss, deep colours. On the other hand if you are choosing a standard/ pale/ Matt colour then the more cost effective laminate may give you the look you want for less money.

Hi there! MDF is very porous so if you apply paint straight to it it dries incredibly quickly and creates a bubbled/uneven finish. I believe you need to prime it to seal it first, then sand, and then apply paint. As for types of paint, once primed and sanded I think any will do. Best of luck with the painting :)

Sorry, I am a bit late to this party! So, if you did not already have the primer, I would have said speak to me! Paint has been really well developed so you do not need oil based anymore, you can get waterbased paint that is tried and tested for kitchen cabinets now. There seems to be too much going on in your kitchen which is jarring, with colour and everything crowded around the old chimney breast. Perhaps the simplest thing to do might be to remove the backsplash and paint all the walls a warm neutral to tie in with the cupboard doors. I think the upper cupboards on the LHS of the old chimney breast could be removed to give a greater sense of space. As Jonathan has said, under cabinet lighting will brighten the space.
