Stainless steel in the kitchen - yay or nay?
Comments (23)A lot of people ask how easy it is to clean stainless steel [worktops]. The simple answer is 'very easy' and GEC Anderson recommend the microfibre cloths that have been mentioned by a number of contributors, in combination with cold water. Simply wipe down the worktop after use to prevent build up of streaks or marks - especially, in hard water areas. And that's it! Some words of caution probably should be taken into account before making a final decision as to whether stainless steel suits your lifestyle. Stainless steel is prone to attracting finger prints and marks and so the key here is to regularly wipe down the surface so as not to let dirt and extraneous material to build up in the first place. Another thing to consider is that stainless steel will scratch and mark over time. This is perfectly normal! Scratches and marks will build up over time, creating a unique patina appearance. Simply ignore them. Your stainless steel worktop will outlast pretty much every other alternative worktop material and should provide you with several decades of useful service....See MoreHow to use the space above a utility room in a converted barn
Comments (3)Have you seen the 'idiot abroad' show where he has an ensuite shed in his room in India? This reminds me of that brilliant episode and how useful it is to essentially have a shed indoors - love the paint store already on top of your utility but perhaps a indoor treehouse for either adults or kids to enjoy? Seriously though, think hard about whether you really want utility in the kitchen before getting rid of this eccentric gem....See MoreKitchen Plan Sense Check
Comments (6)Thanks guys. The main prep area is the island. I’m currently rejigging it to have a larger bin on the island. Re the island depth, the granite is 2500x1350 and there’s 600mm oak wrap over the end. We could make the base cupboards the people end shallower. I can’t swing the island the other way due to the doors through to the bifold doors and a pesky pillar. The baking cupboard could have a slide out shelf for the mixer, but the pull up mechanism would give me the island space to weigh out ingredients etc. The other option I’ve been playing around with is the hob on the back wall with a 500mm base unit each side, then the fridge & freezer one side and both ovens in one tall unit & a breakfast cupboard next to that. Then I’ve added a 500mm tall unit either side of the dresser, one for baking & one for snacks and shrank the middle section by putting in a 300 wine fridge instead of the 600. This leaves the island as purely prep space with a 600mm unit of bins and a prep sink. I’m not sure whether this would be less social than the hob on the island though?...See MoreFirst home- help needed with colour themes
Comments (5)Congratulations on your new house - exciting times, and you’re also v lucky to be getting such a lovely kitchen! As others have said - most things would looks great. Personally, I don’t like the full coordinated look - and for things like kettles and toasters, I would stick to stainless steel or chrome, because then it can’t go out of fashion! I also don’t like to have loads out on the side - so if you’ve got room for your tea and coffee in a cupboard, I’d keep it there! That also saves money because the containers that they came in can go straight in the cupboard - no need to decant into different ones. If you need to have them on the side, I recommend a trip to somewhere like TK Maxx where there’s lots of styles - see which ones you are drawn to - if you really like them, then fashion becomes irrelevant and you’re likely to get good use out of them....See MoreDaisy England
