How would you redesign this small space?

How would you make space for a couple of stools and a space to eat breakfast in here with my little boy and what would you do to soften the black worktops, add some colour but keep a bit of 1930s scandi charm? We are going to remodel in a year or two to make an open plan kitchen diner but want it to feel nice in the meantime. Thanks so much.

If you have adequate base units you could take one out leaving the worktop in place and add a couple of breakfast bar stools.

Hi Catherine, unfortunately the property is end of terrace and the adjoining building is towards the left so no windows on the side with the two reception rooms but I like the interesting ideas - Thanks! OnePlan - wow - I like it - that's a great plan! I absolutely love the idea of removing the lean to and extending the building with a glass roofed extension. Great work - I love it! I did also think to add an extension out the back of the property - about 6x7m extension to use as the main living area of the house as it gets a lot of light. I've attached a basic drawing below of how it would be situated. I would like to add skylights and concertina doors to let as much light into the house as possible. The garden is enormous so am happy to lose this space as it still leaves a huge space in the garden. I am just conscious that I may be blocking some light into the kitchen/family room. I wonder how I could get past this. Another question would be around the upstairs... I've attached the plan for the upstairs as I have no idea how we would redesign this.... bedrooms 3 and 4 are fairly dark and narrow... the landing is also very dark as there is no natural light that can reach that space so considered light tubes from the roof. My only problem with this was that if I wanted to convert my loft in the future, this would cause problems. I do need a 4 bedroom house... I need three bedrooms, one guest room and ideally two bathrooms but can live with one upstairs and one downstairs. Any ideas would be massively appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. Rom

Garlic press. Always too small and always come out of the dishwasher with bits of 'clean' garlic still stuck on! I also bought one of those circle ones with blades inside that you roll over the counter - again too small! One clove at a time. I love garlic! Also jemc159 - please see our new AquaBlade toilet (Ideal Standard) no nasty rim to clean and the seat lifts off for quick and easy cleaning :-)

The spac look like a formal entrance hall but it doesn't really function as such because the entrance doors to both the kitchen and the lounge are both at the corner before you move into the space. How about you cancel those doors and instead open large double French doors in the middle of the hallway leading to the lounge, and a large opening leading to the kitchen. You can then place carefully picked furniture on the sides of those doors and turn the hall into a welcoming space. It will also help with the organisation of the kitchen. the current corner door in an obstacle. Another option is to take down the wall between the hall and lounge and create a much bigger lounge with doors to the kitchen. Hi Jenni, It's a little bit hard to see from this photo, but what you are asking should be easily achievable at relatively low cost. Do you have some additional photos from different angles and maybe even a floor plan from the house sales brochure? Hi Jenni, a few ideas to start thinking about but like I said if you can send me more info I can work better with what you have:

- just as Daisy suggested above - take out one or two base units and replace them with a breakfast bar of choice. A local joiner should be able to do this at relatively low cost.

- if you want to make the most out of the glorious sunshine, I would put the breakfast to the left of the window. Just be aware that you will be facing a cupboard in that case, so you may want to consider putting the breakfast bar somewhere on the right hand side instead.

- add 2 X bar stools

- add 1 or two rusting floating rustic wooden shelves that run all along the right hand side. The wooden shelves will add warmth and open shelving will give you additional storage without making the room feel even narrower. It will also add interest and you can add seasonal decorations and pops of colour with any accessories.

- if you need additional storage space, you can hang some pots and pans or utensils under the shelf. There are many metal type hanging systems available which could work well.

- I would keep the white tiles, but consider painting them if you do not like the colour or pattern.

- You can also paint all kitchen worktops providing you have the right paint for the material of the worktops and prime and seal it all properly. You can even paint formica worktop which I believe may be what you have? Basically these days you can paint pretty much any surface providing you have the right primer, colour and sealant.

- consider painting the window and door frames, to draw the eyes outward to the greenery and to frame the beautiful view

- consider covering the existing floor with vinyl - I would choose patterned tiled effect with something that runs the width rather than the length of the room, to optically widen the space.

- alternatively, consider adding a washable runner - again I would choose colour and/or pattern to create interest

- add roman blinds to window

- consider painting cupboards a different colour

I hope this gives you some ideas - I have attached some images from pinterest for inspiration.

I would be happy to help you further and create some actuals plans and moodboards if you are interested. As I said I would need measurements and floor plan and possibly and ideally an idea of what your budget is and whether you will be doing the work yourself or not.
