Need help with my bathroom
Comments (7)I have just gone through this process. My plumber and the specialist tiler each made the same points: (1). Around the "heavy water flow" areas, mosaics are higher risk. The weakest point for water getting in is the grouting. If you use small tiles, you maximise the chances of water damage simply because there is more grouting. (2). Very large wall tiles make their lives more difficult. I used huge wall tiles (90cm X 30cm) and they both said that those very large tiles are more difficult to ensure a completely flat surface. The plastered walls are never completely flat and even and it is easier to adjust adhesive levels with more regular sized tiles. Not a reason to avoid massive tiles (although they seem to be more expensive) but just be aware. On the upside, there are fewer grout lines, so less likely to get water damage! (3). If you get a heavily textured tile surface, it is much more difficult to get a really clean tile cut when they need to trim them. Can result in higher wastage as a result. So, overall, I'd avoid mosaics other than as a trim in bath or shower areas. To keep costs down and make the job faster, go for a smooth wall tile no bigger than 60x40cm. Or ignore all this and go for what you love!...See MorePlease save my bathroom! Too much going on:-(
Comments (17)Hi Stefka, The bathroom is coming along nicely. Is the bath panel a match to the sink base? What material is the floor, vinyl or wood? If it's wood and you're not happy with the colour, have you considered either bleaching it, then colour washing it to a similar colour to the tiles around the bath or staining it darker? (Going darker will make the bathroom seem smaller.) To keep the textures and colours as simple as possible, paint the plaster walls a colour that is 2-3 shades lighter than the square wall tiles. A different colour will chop the room up more. A big mirror over the sink ledge, wall to wall, will make a huge difference to the feel of the room. It will reflect light all around and visually double the space. Colour can be added through towels and accessories like special bottles for oils and lotions. Your tiles look to be a pinky beige so look at neutrals or pale turquoise. Dunelm Mill has a good selection http://www.dunelm.com/product/so-soft-zero-twist-towels-1000016871 or http://www.dunelm.com/product/egyptian-cotton-bathroom-collection-b01010 If you are overlooked and want privacy throughout the day and night, why not consider waterproof plantation shutters. They will give you light if you angle the louvres and total privacy at night. http://www.purelyshutters.co.uk/window-shutters/plantation-shutters/waterproof Because your window is in the shower area, fabric will rot and mildew very easily. Plastic shutters can be wiped down with ammonia and water in the course of cleaning the bathroom and allow access to the window for cleaning and ventilation....See MoreUpdating a small, white-tiled bathroom and colour advice please.
Comments (15)Sanitary ware. I'm having a crisis of decision making. I bought a new sink and vanity from IKEA: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/washstands-taps/wash-stands/fullen-t%C3%A4lleviken-wash-basin-cabinet-white-spr-39891444/ However, it's occurred to me since that it'll take up too much of the room/floorspace, especially as the sink faces you as you walk in. I've been looking at other designs, and the wall-hung sink with a nicer-looking chrome waste could be a much better option. Added to this, if I'm tiling the floor, I'll probably need to buy a new loo, and IKEA doesn't do matching loos. Therefore...where can I buy a basic loo/basin package? What's the difference between a 'toilet and basin' and a 'cloakroom suite'? Should I go for one or two tap holes? Am I wasting my money? Should I just update the taps on the existing sink and tile-box in the waste?...See MoreBathroom help please
Comments (14)Another triumph from Minnie! That is such a nice bathroom and it won’t need much to bring it up to date. Would you consider dark green walls on the non tiled bit? I have sheet vinyl in my bathroom and it’s about 6 years old and still looks tidy. It also has a non slip, slightly gritty feel to it which is great. I would love a Victorian style patterned floor but I can’t justify it as there’s nothing wrong with the current floor - damn!...See MoreHannah Night
