How to make a low beam look better

last year

I have a large low beam in middle of kitchen. Height from floor to beam is 6'4", it is a double width beam so it looks quite overpowering. It runs the length of kitchen approx 5m. It's just painted white just now but looking for ideas to disguise it. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I think the beam needs to stay white the same colour as the ceiling. Do something more to it is going to highlight it more. I think it would be better to introduce some colour to the hob run or all walls, which would give better definition and character to the room as well making people focus on the room not the beam. Good luck :))

You can get hollowed out Oak beams to cover it or decorative fake ones

For a quick, easy and cheap facelift you'll be amazed how far a clean-up alone will go. Jet wash the wall and the driveway setts. Put a lick of paint on the ironwork, black would definitely be good. Brush in fresh kiln-dried sand between the setts. Prune back those sad looking shrubs before they get back into growth, which will be any time now. Don't cut back those firs, they will not grow back and are likely to just die. If you do anything at all with them, get rid and plant something which grows more happily in this country. It's a low definition photo so I can't see the state of the lawn or whether the wall needs re-pointing. Look yourself and treat accordingly. That alone will lift the place sufficiently to give you breathing space. Then you can think through what budget you have left and which of the many ideas available you prefer and can prioritise accordingly. On the other hand, whatever you do will not look good while all that looks scruffy and unloved.

I don't know if you've done this already but make sure the mortar is an appropriate colour for the period. I made this mistake and was told the modern grey would fade but it hasn't.

I guess you could have the window replaced and build the wall up to the right height with a smaller window. You'd need to check planning on that though and how that affects the exterior of the house as it may mean that window then won't be in line with others in the house.

If it was me I d knock the porch down then build a new one with tiled roof that goes across the front window like a canopy so it ties in together. Not sure if you want to involve the front room as well but you could make that a bay window

You can't disguise it but you can make something else the most eyecatching thing in the space, for example, coloured bar stools or a rug under the table.

I would also go with something on the hob walls, maybe even a couple of pictures if you don’t want tiles or a splash back. That will take the eye to that wall rather than the beam.

How you have it seems the best option, that is painted the same colour as your ceiling. Many new large kitchens have to have support beams. Would you consider painting the end wall or perhaps adding some colourful tiles and shelving? Otherwise, as has already been suggested, you can distract by adding colour, such as art, to the walls.
