Need ideas for awkward space behind bed in guest bedroom

last year

We’ve moved the king sized bed away from the window to this position but now we’re covering the open shelf of the built in wardrobe.

Was wondering what we could do with this area to make it look more finished that’s not going to cost the Earth?

The built in wardrobe is made of MDF I believe and inside the hole is just wall.

Could you place a board over the gap to provide a faux solid wall to match in?

Fix a sheet of MDF and paint it the same colour as the cupboards.

Richtraff, I see you are located in the UK, yes? In my area of the US, realtors won't list a room as a bedroom unless it has a built in closet. If it only fits a free-standing wardrobe, it is listed as a den. I'm not sure whether this is a local quirk of our real estate market or whether it is a more widespread practice. But my point is that you probably need to consult a realtor in your area to see if there are any minimum requirements (size, closet, etc.) for listing a room as a bedroom when you sell, and also for advice about the pros and cons of a bigger bathroom vs bigger guest room when listing in your area.

I have bought some Scandi / retro style oak bedside tables and the copper lamps are on. I also have a white shade with copper interior on the main light. The plan now is for a grey carpet and light grey walls. Need to consider contrast. Bedding will be white. Likely to tone bed colour down (either white wash or Annie Sloan grey). Any other suggestions guys?

OK i think you have a number of challenges here. First up does that cot not collapse? It looks like a travel cot. If it does then take it down immediately and store it in the loft or under the bed. I'm not sure that your furniture placement is correct. The bed next to the wardrobe looks odd and the bed looks like it is blocking the radiator. Will the head of the bed go against the wall with the single shelf? Personally I'd remove the sink. Sinks in bedrooms are not a good look. Understand that you might need it though if you only have one bathroom though. Remove all of the shelving. Curtains are way too short and should be floor length. Easily fixed by attaching some fabric to the bottom. Your curtain pole is also too low and should be closer to the ceiling. I'd add coving and then a soft grey on the walls. Something like ammonite perhaps or if you want blue then Skylight which is a nice blue/grey (depending on the light) which would go with the blues already present in the carpet and curtains. Much fuller duvet with white bedding, some throws, cushions, rug etc to bring in pattern and texture and a nice bedside lamp.

Wow- so overwhelmed by the replies and all of the help, couldn't appreciate it any more. Emily- thank you so much for your post. It's currently pushed against a wall which works fine but would prefer it to have access either side for a couple if possible :) Ace your space- I really like the layout that way, there is a radiator under the window (i should have said) so would need moving which think may be a bigger job. It's something i would consider though and hadn't though of it that way. Jonathon- I am in love with the pegs they would be perfect. Your room layout is my dream just didn't know if it would be achievable. I have a king size bed at the moment but it's a very big frame so much bigger than the standard measurements so if i turn it your way there is about a 8 cm gap to the shorter wall so it needs replacing. Man about the house- love the layout and interesting to get more than one view thank you so much All- can i please be cheeky and ask another question. I think my issue is a standard size double would fit e.g 190cm long but when i look at standard sites e.g John Lewis, Next, Dreams all of the beds seem to have a frame which is 208-210cm which would just be too long. Do you know where I can find a frame that is 190cm? I would have loved a flip storage bed but recognize that will be too long so I am open to any bed. Budget for bed up to about £700 ish. Less if obviously great and means more money to spend on the rest of room.
