http://www.crown-imperial.co.uk/kitchen/technical/dimensions.aspx This is a link to a typical British manufacture - all sizes are in millimetres not inches over here in UK and height of extractors above hobs are dependant on type of hob and manufactures guidelines for appliance but typically induction 450mm clearance , electric solid plate or ceramic / halogen 650mm clearance , gas 750mm clearance. aga's and similar can't have anything deeper than 338mm over them and require (mostly ) 750mm clearance . The difference between upper and base cabinets it usually determined by the height of the tall cabinets. European manufacturers have a vast array of all sorts of sizes !! Hope that helps a bit too !!

How did you resolve the kitchen wall lighting in the end?? I would be really interested to know what you did and whether you are happy with the result, as I am in the process of purchasing a house with exactly the same set up on the wall where the hob is, and am wondering how best to create ambient/task lighting over that worktop.

Happy Sunday everyone! What a difference a week makes... we’ve had time to review, scribble, calculate, visit another kitchen designer AND spend 10 hours in London looking at appliances, flooring, tiles and island lighting... whew! Oliver, thank you. Your sketches helped us lift our expectations above what was being offered by what I thought were the affordable brands (still £2-3k higher than expected, cabinets only). I think we’ll keep the wine cooler on the outside of the island, as that’s where wine glasses will be stored, and where DH will be getting drinks (I really don’t like having anyone on the working side of the island when I’m working - it’s quite odd...) Given our new view on the cost of our preferred appliances, we are now weighing the pros and cons of integrated vs free-standing fridge /freezers, in that the price of the appliances are about the same, but the extra cabinets do add up. I prefer the integrated look, but I think I might prefer the freestanding in action. These options are shown below. (Don’t get excited about the living room - it doesn’t look like that!) Speaking of extra cabinets, the new lady has come up with quite a snazzy upper layout that is just enough to hide the hood (DH has come round to a canopy hood :). Will keep you posted. Thoughts welcome. Have a great week!

Hi Joanne, Questions to ask yourself are Would you like the room to be : - brighter or darker - cosy or fresh - feel larger or smaller - feel warmer or cooler - feel cheery, neutral or moody Also which way is the room orientated north? What are the other colours that are in the rest of the house? If these colours are all cohesive the spaces will link well and the house will feel larger. Interior Designers can offer a colour consultation - this is brief example of some of the factors that should be considered but the full service is best in person as the designer can get the feel for the space and samples can be viewed in the correct light which makes all the difference.
