Drilling into porcleain tiles

Our bathroom has porcelain tiles on the wall. We needed to drill into these to install a toilet roll holder and hired a handyman - it took over 2 hours to drill one hole so he advised not drilling the second and just using glue. Is it normal to take so long to drill into porcelain tile?

The glue fix isn't working so I need to get the second hole drilled after all, and am keen to have a sense as to whether another 2 hours is a reasonable amount of time!

2 hours seems excessive was he using a diamond tipped drill bit? TBF they burn out so easy so could've been using a blunt drill bit

As Ricky states, you do need the right drill to get through porcelain which is very hard. Two hours sounds mega excessive!

Always worth checking with Lasscos, if they don't have any then they may be able to suggest where you can get some, and who may be able to restore the ones you have. They have a few locations so worth going and having a look or at least giving them a call. They will also probably have some other 30s bathroom fixtures. Homebase does some great porcelain tiles - Luna. The beige (also available in black but won't recommend) one will work well with your units I think. You can use the 300x600 size for the wall and the 400x400 for floor. They are not expensive at all, we paid only around £12/m when we did our bathroom in the old flat, hope the photos below show. Be aware they are very difficult to drill though. The word porcelain says it all! :). For the splash black though, it's been my dream to have a coloured glass one, any colour will go well with your neutrally coloured units. So if you managed to save a bit on floor tiles, I'd use the savings on glass. All the best!

You might be pleasantly surprised how different it will look when you change the wall colour. Perhaps if you didn't that first, you'd not need to change the grout. I'd agree; if the tiles aren't symmetrical then a darker grout line would highlight this. I'd also agree that dark grey would look great - you have this in your floor mats and it looks nice against your gorgeous floor tiles. We went grey in our ensuite. Hubby was concerned it would be dark, but we love it. Worst case - if you change your mind, paint is an easy swap. Good luck ;)

Okay, appreciate the advice given so far. Went to the local tile shop with medium grey and sand grout samples and found that sand was a different shade to the sample in the shop. After taking newer samples out it looks to be my tiler samples had discoloured. So in the end sand was much browner than I wanted. Below is medium grey and also a lighter version (manhattan). Also size of the job. Now wondering if I should go lighter?

I hope you didn’t pay him. He didn’t have the right tool for the job- if he had a good drill bit it would have taken a noisy 5 minutes

I had to fit shower & shower screen last week, purchased a diamond bit from
