Cost effective fencing solutions please

Can anyone recommend any on-line fence companies or have any bright ideas how to cheaply put some fencing in? Really need to replace our front fences but cost is a huge factor. Doesn’t have to be fences. Just need a cost effective solution that looks ok! Thanks in advance.

Will you be putting up the fencing yourself? You could put up trellis instead of fencing, so you’ll need fence posts as well as the trellis, which comes in different heights.

Congratulations on the sale. You don't mention how high you want the fence to be but in windy conditions the most important thing is to install a fence that the wind can pass through to prevent it being damaged by gails and gusts! A picket fence from someone like Jacksons goes up to 1.2m (4ft) and their 'hit and miss' or woven fencing then goes to 6ft. Planting a hedge in front of it is a great idea as this then puts even more visual screening in place. I work in the counties just west of London and see more and more people putting in mixed hedges and having them 'laid' or woven into a pattern- it's a traditional method of installing hedges that looks very natural yet orderly AND because you aren't planting a mono-culture of one species, it's great for wild life. Doing it in Winter is the best time as you will get 'bare-root' hedging at a great price. Do let us know what you end up doing!

I can't help with the fencing situation but my neighbours cats used to ALWAYS poo in my front garden which when coming home each night was not a pleasant sight or smell. I filled water bottles and popped them in the areas the sun hit, apparently cats don't like the glare? Wasn't the most attractive solution but it worked!

E D is right. A garden boundary with another neighbour shouldn’t exceed 2 meters in height. However if the neighbour agrees to some trellis then it shouldn’t be a problem just be aware that if they change their mind or if they move out and you have new neighbours then you could be forced to take it down. Same applies to evergreen hedging which exceeds 2 meters. Jonathan’s suggestion for Portuguese Laurel is a good one tho as it’s very easy to grow and can be easily pruned to shape. Personally I would go for 1 deciduous tree or 2 deciduous shrubs but look up the eventual height and spread. For a tree I might look for a blossom, Prunus sargentii (Sargent’s cherry) looks to be a nice shape for the space. For shrubs there’s lots of choice but have a look at Virburnum oculus ‘Roseum’ (Snowball tree), Philadelphus coronarius (Sweet mock orange), and good old buddliea (butterfly bush). These should grow well with very little care and if they do get out of hand then should be relatively easy to prune back.

Hi Houzzers I'm hoping you can help with some some ideas to spruce up our garden. I’m hoping you can help with some ideas to spruce up our garden. It’s a fairly small area and we’re trying to achieve a few different things – a nice place to sit out and enjoy the sun etc as well as providing space for the kids. It also needs to be easy maintenance! We don’t have a huge budget, added to which we are hoping to move in a few years so don’t want to sink a lot of money into it that we won’t get back. I’m attaching some pictures of how it looks at the moment, including some fence damage from the recent storms which we’ll need to sort as part of this. We’d welcome any suggestions to improve and soften the boundaries, currently there’s a lot of mismatched fencing going on. We’ve found it difficult to grow much at the back where it’s very shady and competing with some flourishing laurel the other side of the fence! The other side obviously needs its fence sorting out. We don't know whether to bite the bullet and replace all of it so that it matches. The patio is a bit old and some of the pointing has come out which makes it a bit unattractive but we can't really afford to replace the whole thing just at the moment. We'd be very grateful for any ideas on the following: 1) how best to cover the mismatched panels on the right (we don't own this fence) 2) how to soften the look of the back fence 3) best solutions for replacing the left (part missing) fence 4) cost effective upgrades for the patio/seating area.
