Tricky wall space! Can’t seem to get the right picture size or layout!

Hi people,

I’ve had a few different tries at finding the right art/ pictures to fill the space above this kitchen seating area. The picture that’s there now is all wrong and my other previous attempts, using bigger pictures in a landscape orientation, have been equally unsuccessful. I think it’s the little window that makes it tricky to get the balance right...

A portrait wall perhaps? Or a shelving layout instead?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Thanks ☺️

I think it looks lovely. I would just lower the picture so it is level with the window.

Can you line up the picture with the little window? - bring it down so that the top of the picture is level with the top of the window.

This artwork looks fabulous is the space - as thistlejak says, it just needs to be hung lower, or even rested on the shelf around the top of the banquette (if there is one).

Hi Lauren, Reading this I think you don't love it yet because there is too much contracts between the dark sofa and the light wall. Paint the wall, don't worry about light- that is a massive window. Don't worry about it feeling smaller - it won't I also agreed that the curtains need to be on a wider pole or the window should be dressed with an additional something (wood slatted blind?)

So here is the fireplace from the sofa opposite. Yes, you are right this is an Edwardian house, in the Arts and Crafts style. The wood throughout the downstairs is unpainted cedar, including all window frames, panelling, skirting and picture rails. It looks amazing when it's oiled, it has tiger stripes through it! So, if I painted the beams, they would be the only painted wood in the main house ( kitchen areas and upstairs and attic rooms are painted ). The room is South facing with two big bays, the one on the left of the fireplace has a window seat. This room is bright in the daylight but really gloomy at night. We have 4 wall lights at either end, 3 picture lights and a light over the fireplace. This room has a lot of potential but we just have never bothered to pay attention to it. Too busy bringing up children! I would really like this room to turn into something splendid, but comfortable.

Depending on how many people watch tv, I'd try the same As Carolina's 2nd suggestion but with one chair where the tv is angled towards the sofa (but not pushed right against the wall) with the tv in the other alcove. I do agree with Emily though! Seating arrangements are important for a cosy/homely feel but so are various other elements so why not post pictures so people can make suggestions? If you've got the space I'd also add a slim console behind the sofa as it will give the feeling of separation from the hall. You can pick up ones that are 25cm deep so could always move the sofa forward a fraction. If you don't want to add pics then think lighting, art, plants, colour, a range of different textures, books, diffuser or scented candle plus a rug to zone the seating area and perhaps some things that have meaning to you. Do you also have anything in the dining area other than a table? I have an obsession with cocktail trollies (and it's costing us a fortune with a g&t or 2 after work for my husband! ) but they're great for when socialising and needn't just contain alcoholic drinks if you don't drink!

Ignore what i’ve used as I’m being lazy (and can’t extract the light!) but I’d create a gallery wall using your existing art

Try seeing what works for you with paper templates, I’ve centred the bottom art to the middle of the table and attempted the same space either side of the return walls for balance. i think cushions on the left would add further balance and maybe even a roman blind

Thanks all. I think Minnie has nailed it. Needs a gallery wall that incorporates a piece that mirrors the window position and proportions. I’ll mark it out with tape as suggested and post an update. Really appreciate the input - thanks 🙏

It looks fabulous. I would add a russet small velevet bolster on one end of the seating area and an acid yellow on the other. Add an acid yellow platter on the table and your done. Just repeat what's there.

Think placing gallery pictures at so many varying levels looks disjointed. If you wanted to go with gallery layout higher than the window then perhaps you could place picture on extreme right at the same height as the window with middle ones placed higher. This would give your wall a better sense of cohesion, hope this makes sense!
